Ke’Shawn Stafford 10/06/2023 Theatre Play Responses Question one - Medea's actions, which included betraying her family killing the king and her daughter, and even slaughtering her children undoubtedly cast her as a figure. However, the play is skillfully crafted to evoke both terror and sympathy for Medea throughout the drama. Each of Medea's choices is accompanied by justifications that give us insight into why she acted as she did. As readers, we can't feel a sense of sorrow, for Medea and understand the circumstances she faced. The playwright ensures that from beginning to end Medea's suffering elicits both sympathy and fear in readers and audiences by shedding light on the motivations behind her actions. This focus on Medea's life becomes evident in the play when her nurse describes how Jason broke their vows while pursuing the Golden Fleece; "Poor Medea feels dishonored by his promises sealed with his hand (the most solemn pledge there can be) – she calls upon the gods to witness how poorly Jason has reciprocated." (line 25). But from Medea's perspective being used against her family and aiding him in his quest were sacrifices worth making because of her love for him and desire to be with him forever. After completing his mission, Jason and Medea settled in Corinth with their two children. But not too long after Jason decided to leave Medea and marry the princess of Corinth to further his aspirations. It was Jason's actions that drove Medea to resort to murder. This act of betrayal sets Medea on a path of revenge and deep sorrow.
Question two – I'll explain why I believe that these themes—passion, rage, and revenge—are relevant to this drama. Passion/Rage - She gave up everything for her passionate love of Jason and committed unimaginable acts on his behalf. However, his treachery towards her has transfigured passion into fury. The violence of her breasts had given up before for Jason. Greeks wanted to explore the extremes of emotions, and the price of ignoring feelings, and regarded powerful passion and fury as symbols or components of high esteem. Medea would be one instance of the “madness” taken way too far; it is a portrayal of a fanatic female who prefers aggression over forgiveness. Revenge - The allure of revenge is one reason why the play remains an enduring favorite. To be successful, revenge has to be completed and Medea is prepared to sacrifice everything. Perversely enough, she kills her offspring to save them from their revengers’ counter-revenge; as well as to hit Jason, since after those murders, she becomes cursed herself by guilt, which would bring her restless and sorrowful years. However, it has to be said that one reason why Medea is considered powerful lies in its functioning as an exaggerated revenge story – each one has sometimes been attacked by the oppressors, who used force. Just as with Medea, we have even dreamt out the complete revenge that one should take. Even as we feel as if watching Medea with horror and pleasure, correspondingly, we look at her just like any chorister. Question three - When Medea outlines the actions, she plans to take to exact revenge on herself and constantly makes reference to her "ulterior" motivations, the drama assumes a profoundly prophetic tone. She begs Creon in the first episode to leave her alive for only one night when they are both alone, and she asks herself if he won't die soon because he asks what damage can come to him if she is only given one day. She once questioned Jason when they would care for their sons in the hypothetical event that one of them killed their sons. Hence, I believe that the
tone of the story might have been different if Euripides had not been such an expressive author who had no problems expressing what he thought or what would make people upset. It is important to note that each of the previously mentioned descriptions, including the portrayal of Medea's "witch-like" excitement while revealing her desire only for her husband's destruction, Creon's pride, Jones' arrogance and selfishness, and the nurse's agony as she observes Medea, whom she has raised as her own child driven to kill her own two children, all needed specific lines to strengthen the audience's attention. Question four – Medea is a lady who exhibits extreme emotions and behavior. She made mistakes and did bad things out of her unwavering love for Jason. His betrayal of her led to the profound hatred he now feels for her. Her stern and fierce heart, once ablaze with love for Jason, is now devoured with revenge. Because Medea charts Medea's emotional changes from suicidal despair to vicious wrath, it ought to be noteworthy. According to this claim, she decides to act and murder multiple people, including her own children, because Jason duped her. What's more, she made the decision not to feel guilty about what she had done and to let Jason cope with his sadness. At one point in my life; I was a very emotional person, who when subjected to unfairness, as it happened with Medea by Jason; I would have been incredibly angry, furious, and vengeful. That’s why I relate to Medea, but I did overcome it very soon in my life. This is significant because, in modern America, most households still rely on male leadership, just as it did in Medea's home in ancient Greece. Consequently, rather than living alongside her husband, the wife essentially lives beneath him. Because of the pervasive sexism in our society, women are unable to simply leave this experience. Despite being a tale from over a thousand years ago, Medea deals with current issues.
