Cooley1 Tyler Cooley English 101 Geoffrey Arnold 4 June 2023 Tuition-Free Community College After graduating high school, many want to further their education but not many people can afford to pay out of pocket for their full tuition that comes with being a college student. If we considered making community colleges tuition free we can begin to see changes in academic success, more people applying and attending community colleges and better mental health for students that are currently enrolled, as tuition free college would help with the stress of financial burdens. Community college is what most students that have or are graduating from high school wish to attend to higher their education. Most cannot afford to attend college, however, due to being low income or not being able to pay out of pocket for their tuition. It ’s not only the tuition that has to be paid for, but its student parking fees also, student health fees, and even books and materials that are almost always required for the courses a student chooses to take. On top of having to pay out of pocket for these things required to attend a community college, the issue of student debt still is rising every year. When a student is paying out of pocket to attend a community college, they often are offered to apply for a student loan to help them with paying for their books, and whatever else they need for college. These students often do not realize the aftereffects of stress and mental health decline when they are due to pay for the loan they applied for. In an article by Fran Cubberly, called “The Reality Of Free Community College Tuition,” Cubberly states that “ The more than one trillion dollar student loan debt is frightening and many are questioning the value of higher education as a result. (Pg. 21) The rising amount of student
Cooley2 loan debt shows exactly why tuition for community colleges should be free to everyone who wishes to further their education for their career path. Joe Weiner Wrote in his article called “Aiming Higher: Make College Tuition Free,” which gives great research on the problems regarding higher education's tuition and how students have come to find themselves dealing with debt: [T he mother of all problems in higher education today is high tuition at public colleges and universities, which forces students into decades of debt and makes for-profit schools seem like a plausible alternative. College used to be free at institutions like the University of California and other state schools not that long ago. In 2014, tuition was abolished in, of all places, Tennessee. And in January, Obama asked Congress to fund a plan making two-year community colleges tuition- free. That’s a good start, but we need more. Making four years of college free is not only fair; it’s also politically possible.” He isn't wrong when stating this, its true that community colleges are becoming a problem with their high rising tuition every year. 4 years of college being free is a great start but what happens after the four years? Students will have no choice but to drop out due to not being able to financially afford the remainder of their education even after the four years that were offered free to them, not including the student loan debts in the process. (Pg.224) With community college tuition being free, we will see rising numbers of people attending colleges, and more success in people achieving their degrees, just all around more opportunities for many people even including low income students. Not only will there be more academic success and opportunity but once a student advances to university after their credits are met during their time at a community college then they can be better financially stable to afford a university. Although, community college free tuition comes with a lot of pros and benefits. We
