The Literature Review and Sources for Parades and Their Many Impacts
Parades are a staple of many communities big or small, or even multiple at once. Parades
happen frequently throughout the year, so this project is to help elaborate these staples. Parades
not only take planning from the hosting city to decide routes, but how do these routes affect
everybody and their ways of living? Therefore, the question of this project is: How does the
pathing of parades correlate with the zoning of buildings, as well as the effect of noise pollution
on either Purdue Campus or the Greater Lafayette Area? Information that I wish to uncover from
this research project is for the audience to learn about the impacts from a parade, whether it be
positive or negative, crowd management or route calculations, commercial impacts or even
sound production and resonation. These are all aspects of parades that affect many people
whether they are participating or not in the parade. The information that could be produced
would be a new form of route for parades around the Greater Lafayette Area and Purdue
Campus. I also hope that the research that could be provided in this project be used for other
events such as festivals, carnivals, or any other community events.
Many of these sources do not directly help this research, however they do share small
concepts that could be implemented into this research topic about community events and their
impacts. Community events are also considered as small-scale spatial events, which can change

the normal schedule and adjust the interactions between goods, perspectives and ideas of the
local people, and their movement throughout the local area. All of these are considered as local
dynamics, which could be an outlet that this research could follow. It would be interesting to see
the many effects that a small-scale spatial event has sociologically, but to also see how these
events change the pathing of people during the duration of these community events. Using the
model by (Batty et al., 2003), observations of the local people could be calculated in either
observed events or any simulation. Running simulations could be useful to provide ideas of
crowd and traffic management, which could be useful to form a reroute or relocation. A
relocation could be considered depending on the noise pollution and the effect on the natural
soundscape of that area. City and community soundscapes are typically the same, however they
can easily be influenced on the societal as well as the ecological environments as well. A huge
influence on all natural soundscapes was the COVID-19 pandemic as human confinement
changed the overall city life. According to, (Ulloa et al., 2021), there was a significant drop of
noise in urban areas during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was a time these researchers took
advantage of to measure the effects people alone have on a soundscape. This is an important
reference to see how easily soundscapes can be impacted, which is another outlet to follow
within this research topic on community events. The standard definition of soundscapes are
described as acoustic environments by (Aletta et al., 2018), which also declared soundscapes can
have an impact on the dimensions of an area, the health or well-being of those in the soundscape,
and the correlation between positive health between the previously mentioned. These mentioned
aspects of soundscapes and health could be important to provide a relocation of community
events if there is a decreasing health effect on those in soundscapes that are impacted by these
events. However, soundscapes are not the only thing impacted by the small-scale spatial event,
