Water Wars – Podcast You can listen to the whole podcast, but I want you to focus on the middle story - the water issue in California. 1. Explain, in 1-2 sentences, the issue that exists between the farmers and the community. Water consumption in the area is exceeding the replenishment rate, leading to a depletion of the overall supply. This has resulted in the sinking of the land. Additionally, farmers have started cultivating crops that require more water than what they have traditionally grown, thereby exacerbating the situation. 2. Explain the farmer's point of view. and then explain why they have made the choices they have regarding water usage and crop choices. Include details that let me know you listened to the podcast. Water-intensive crops such as pistachios and almonds are now being used by farmers for a variety of reasons. Production in northern California has a global advantage, and selling the produce overseas can generate big profits. The choice of crop worsens the already delicate subsidence situation. The farmers claim that bad water management over the years is the fault of the government, not the farmers who use too much water. The cost of water hike and an increase in electric bills are the primary reasons they are now switching to crops that pay the bills despite the environmental consequences. 3. Explain the community members' point of view , including specific information from the podcast. Members of the community are concerned and frustrated by the drop in water levels. They cannot even do the most basic functions without ground water, and their properties become worthless without it. "Without water, what do you have?" is the quote that sums up the concern of the community members. 4. As mayor of a town with both farmers and community members, what would you do? And why? It is detrimental to the community as a whole if a solution alienates one of these groups. Compromises that benefit both parties are best for the area. If the local economy did not depend on farmers, the area would face a plethora of other problems. Ohne the community, farmers cannot survive in the area. In my role as mayor, I am responsible for finding a solution that is acceptable to all groups. As part of this plan, farmers would be restricted in the areas and amount of drilling they can do, and we would work with them to find another source of crop water. As well as protecting the communities, the legislation would benefit their water supply. By finding an alternative source of water, the community would also be less dependent on their local groundwater supply. 5. What would be the positive consequences of your plan? -Preventing animosity between community members and farmers -Finding a long term alternative water source
6. What would be the negative consequences of your plan? -This plan would take a long time to complete -It would not totally eliminate the need to drill until a long-term alternative source is found
