On the webpage select a city from the map or scroll below the map, then select one of the
specific city case studies,
Summarize the selected city's current program and future goals. Do you think it is possible for
the city to meet these goals? Why or why not?
Cities100: Vancouver - Building Strategically for Sea Level Rise
I went with Vancouver’s challenge to develop a comprehensive climate change meditation
strategy to change the bylaws to help ensure that new buildings all over our elevations help
protect it from floods and the future sea level rises. This plan was put to action in October 2015.
The challenge for Vancouver was it being ranked amongst the 20 most vulnerable cities of the
world to have sea level rise, it is known to be the largest port in Canada that has caused many
flooding‘s that have serious economic implications for the cities around it. It’s stated that
Canada did not have Insurance mechanisms for the residential flooding or any national flood
hazard programs although with this climate change adaptation strategy their city plans to help
ensure that Vancouver is livable and resilient to climate change and sea level rises. The solution
for Vancouver city was adopting the climate change meditation strategy focusing the cities
vulnerable position to help new buildings and flood prone areas to be built on two elevations for
sea level rise projections in major cities near the coastline making it per prioritizing meditation to
the sea level rise throughout the years. In the result of this coastal flood risk assessment the
responses to sea level rise and associated increase in flood risk they require information as The
depth into potential flooding in various sea level rise scenarios. The goals for these responses
are maximizing the actions that help benefit communities regardless of the degree of sea level
rises for example environmental benefits, social benefits, and economic benefits.
I do believe that there is a possibility that this city Vancouver can help protect a lot more land
against flooding due to the climate changing with this adaptation strategy plan. Even though we
have 100% certainty that climate change will continue to change throughout the years. We won’t
know the exact sea level rise scenarios but we can guess what the amount of data taken from
previous sea rises is. With the goals in mind for the responses to help maximize actions and
benefit the community , the sea level rises in these vulnerable populations are actually helpful
due to the amount of debris created by a storm which can cause a significant concern to the
city. As for the social benefits, this climate change adaptation strategy could help avoid the
damage of many buildings causing it to displace over 13,000 residents. Lastly the economic
benefits could help with the cost of the disaster that was climate related giving the city
emergency funds and significant adaptation actions that would be taken. I do believe that this
challenge could help new buildings being built around flood prone areas to ensure vulnerable
people are being prioritized and given action from potential flooding.
