GEOG330 Dr. Julie A. Podmore Assignment 2: Social Area Analysis Name: EXAMPLE Introduction For this assignment you will conduct a case study of the social geography of your own Montreal neighbourhood using census data. Your goal is to determine the type of neighbourhood you live in according to social area analysis and its primary categories of socio-economic, lifestyle and ethnic status at a micro scale. Your final task will be to determine which type of neighbourhood listed in the PSYTE Canada Advantage Cluster Descriptions (on Moodle) your neighbourhood best resembles. 1. Go to the Statistics Canada 2021 Census Profile link: https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/dp-pd/prof/index.cfm?Lang=E Click on the Postal Code tab and enter your postal code. Scroll down to Census tract and record the number here : 4620143.00 If you do not live within the Montreal CMA, you can choose an area you have once lived in or are familiar with. You can search for neighbourhood area postal codes here: https://www.maptrove.ca/canada-maps/postal-codes/montreal-quebec-postal-code-forward-sortation- areas-map.html . 2. Click on the number to get data on you census tract. You will now see the Census Profile for your tract. Click on the “more information” icon beside the census tract number on the top right of the table. The first tab that appears is a map of your census tract that you can download as a pdf file. Save the map as a pdf and keep it for later when you hand in your assignment. 3. Now click on the Data Table tab (you can also download the whole table). Use the table below to record and calculate the following data for your census tract in Column A and the Montreal CMA. Calculate the difference between your tract and the Montreal CMA data in Column C.
