Week 2 Assignment Template Sustainable Living Guide Contributions, Part Two of Four: Sustaining our Agricultural Resources Your Term: Hydroponics Hydroponics is farming that puts plants in liquids that have the essential nutrients needed to grow crops. They can do this without the need for dirt. Which is one of the main reasons that hydroponics is important. It can be put into use in areas where in-ground agriculture or gardening cannot be achieved (Dunn & Shrestha, 2017). It also helps as it gives you more control over the nutrients that you provide to the crops (Dunn & Shrestha, 2017). This helps save time and money as we do not have to research the soil to see what we can grow. This helps living beings as we can grow food in areas that we would not be able to with traditional soil. An example of this occurred during World War II as the United States Army was stationed on infertile Pacific islands (Dunne & Shrestha, 2017). They used hydroponics to grow and provide fresh food to the soldiers out there fighting. Another way that hydroponics help living beings is that it limits the chances of pests and fungus. The lack of soil helps reduce the bacteria that can grow due to the use of soil (McCray, 2023). Hydroponics can help the environment as it takes less space and resources to start a hydroponic farm than a traditional soil farm. We can help our part to have environmental sustainability for hydroponics by starting a community garden. The fact that it can be done in a small area makes it a perfect candidate for a community garden. The community can build them anywhere since the soil is not required or any big pieces of land. We can try to find a local farmer who is using Hydroponics and support them by buying their crops. It would be a better quality of food since we have controlled nutrients put
into the food. As the farmer gets more support they would be able to reinvest into growing their farms. References : Dunn, B., & Shrestha, A. (2017, April 1).
