How long has it been active? - Erta Ale means the smoking mountain, it has been active for longer than any other volcano on Earth 3. What happened 4.5 billions years ago? -4.5 billions years ago, there was a period called the Hadean. Rocks that were circling the sun collided with one another and became molten. These rocks landed on earth and lots of radioactive material was created. These molten rocks then created one big hot core in our earth. 4. How hot is the core of our planet? -The core of our planet is as hot as the surface of the sun. 5. How does this “inner heat” change our landscape? -The inner heat of the volcanoes keeps erupting and has changed the topography of our land. 6. What’s beneath Iceland? When was it created? -Beneath Iceland there is a super heated rock known as a plume that was created more than 50 million years ago. 7. What happened in 1963? -In 1963 in Iceland, an underwater volcano erupted and blasted it way up to the surface. As a result, a new island was formed named Surtsey.
8. How does the Earth “split apart” and cause land masses to move? -Earth is split into 7 seven chunks called plates. The rocks’ plates spread in 2 directions, the earth’s crust is slowly dragged and causes our land masses to move. 9. What is the name of the “Super Continent”? -The name of the Super Continent is Pangea. 10. Do the plates ever stop moving? -The plates never stop moving. 11. What happens when the plates come together? -When the plates collide with each other, mountains are formed. 12. What do they mean about the mountain's “growing pains”? How do they happen? -A mountain’s growing pains are earthquakes. They happen when great big mountains are formed. 13. How are mountains under attack? -Mountains are under attack from water, rain, and ice. 14. What do the rivers carry from the mountains? Where does it go? -Rivers carry run-off from mountains. This run-off goes into the ocean. 15. What is the most important gift this inner heat gave to the planet? When? -4 billion years ago, the inner heat of our planet gave the birth of life. 16. What gas do volcanoes pump out? What does this gas do? -The gas that volcanoes pump out is carbon dioxide. This gas traps heat in the atmosphere that would otherwise be lost in space.
