Target Deck Two ABA 636: The second weakest area on my mock exam was in selecting and implementing interventions. I scored 53% in concepts and 33% in applications. While it shows I have some conceptual understanding, I lack understanding in how to apply it to my work. Therefore, I need to increase my accuracy and fluency with concepts and applications of selecting and implementing interventions of ABA. The chapter that I chose to review in the Cooper book, was chapter 10: Planning and Evaluating Applied Behavior Analysis Research and chapter 3: Selecting and Defining Target Behaviors. I spent most of my time focusing on chapter 3 because these concepts were a lot harder for me to gasp compared to the concepts in chapter 10. This chapter really helped me go through and understand the different phases of a behavioral assessment. It also emphasized how target behaviors should be chosen based on their social significance to the client. According to Cooper et al., it is important to ask yourself if the behavior will improve the client’s life experience (p. 59). It was also very helpful that this chapter provided visual examples of what the worksheets for anecdotal ABA recording looks like and the worksheet for evaluating socially significant behaviors as well. Chapter 10 in the Cooper book was the different types of experimental designs, which include single-subject and group designs. It also talked about internal and external validity and the difference between independent and dependent variables. Reading this chapter and running SAFMEDS trials were helpful in learning the terminology and making sure I knew where certain terms differed. I also tried something different this week. I decided to try YouTube and find a video to where someone talked about this specific task list section. It was very helpful to hear someone use their own examples and explain it in a different way. SAFMEDS Cards: 1. The term behavioral cusp is subjective and not a universally agreed upon term. 2. A behavior followed by presentation of a stimulus that increases the future rate of similar responses is positive reinforcement. 3. Positive reinforcement is to add as negative reinforcement is to remove 4. Pivotal behaviors appear to result in widespread positive changes in a number of areas 5. Negative punishment is to decrease as negative reinforcement is to increase 6. Imitative behavior is a good example of a pivotal behavior because it can produce changes in other untrained responses 7. A generalized conditioned reinforcer does not depend on an establishing operation for its effectiveness 8. Hearing yay! Is an example of a generalized conditioned reinforcer for some people 9. Functional communication meets the relevance of behavior rule because it is likely reinforced in most environments
10. Negative punishment involves the removal of a stimulus that follows a behavior 11. Negative reinforcement has occurred when the termination of a stimulus immediately following a response result in an increase in responding 12. Behavioral cusps expose the individual’s repertoire to new environments, especially new reinforcers and punishers 13. Negative reinforcement is a behavior followed by removal of a stimulus that increases the future rate of similar responses. 14. Positive reinforcement involves the occurrence of a stimulus immediately following responding that results in an increase over baseline levels. 15. Relevance of behavior rule: only behaviors that are likely to produce reinforcements in the individual’s natural environment should be targeted. 16. The more reinforcers a generalized conditioned reinforcer has been paired with, the greater the likelihood it will be effective 17. Nia’s mom gives Cheerios each time Nia says “more”. The response “more” increases at breakfast. This is positive reinforcement 18. a pivotal behavior produces corresponding modifications or covariations in other adaptive untrained behaviors. 19. Functional communication meets the relevance of behavior rule because it is likely reinforced in most environments. 20. Behavioral cusps expose the individual’s repertoire to new environments, especially new reinforcers and punishers
