5-1 milestone 3(draft)

Dear Stakeholders,
One of the largest burdens on the current healthcare system today is childhood obesity.
This is not only a U.S. issues but it’s quickly becoming a global issue. Currently, childhood
obesity will only increase with time if left alone. Currently the healthcare system is seeing the
stress of childhood obesity but as these children enter adulthood the issue of childhood obesity
will dramatically increase. The universal school meals act was initiated at the begging of the
covid pandemic. This Act was needed at the time and is still needed by many with the expiration
date quickly approaching. We are asking that you help us get this legislation extended
indefinitely extending. As we discuss this we’ll start at the lowest level and work our way back
out to the big picture.
At the individual level this affects the school children the most, providing them with two
meals a day. This legislation helps the lower income family that struggle to be able to provide
healthy food options. In today’s economy healthy food is significantly more expensive then
processed food that have a lower nutritional valve. The universal school meal Act will help
relieve this burden on the family and allow the children to have healthy food options for both
breakfast and lunch.
Moving up to the healthcare system level we’ll see that the universal school meals act
helps teach children to eat healthy option that will decrease the level of childhood obesity.
Childhood obesity is a problem that’s adding unnecessary stress onto the healthcare system.
Childhood obesity adds stress on the healthcare system itself but also greatly affects the future
of the healthcare system as children with childhood obesity often develop many other illnesses
later in life. The impact of this regulation is much greater than the perceived benefit at the
individual level and is changing the future of the healthcare system. Without it we risk
childhood obesity and the related illnesses that long with it, overloading the current healthcare
system.
With the Universal School Meal Act expiring on 30
th
June 2022, we are running out of
time to renew this act or pass similar legislation. This policy was originally intended to help
lower income families during the covid pandemic, but I think we all see the value in it. We need
to at least extend the legislation to see if it continues to help with childhood obesity and reliefs
some of the stress from the healthcare system. Many current models reflect that most of the
stress on the current healthcare system is from preventable issues. With one of the fastest
developing issues being childhood obesity we really need to get in front of it before the stress
on the healthcare system is great.
Which is why we kindly ask for your continued support while we work through
approving new legislation to extend the Universal School meals Act.
