Hit 120 Chapter 2 Real world case 2.1 How could the length of time from diagnosis to surgery have been reduced for Marsha? She could have been able to obtain all her care under one roof if she had gone to a Proprietary hospital rather than having to travel to the offices of many providers, which would have made it more difficult to coordinate her care. What are ways that Marsha could have shared her information between all of the facilities? She could have faxed her records to the different facilities instead of having to carry copies with her to every provider. This way each provider could have reviewed her records in advance. What could her providers have done to make the sharing of information easier for Marsha? Participating in the sharing of EHR would have made things easier for Marsha’s providers because they all would have instant access to her records. Had this been the case, Marsha would not have to wait so long between appointments. Hit 120 Chapter 2 Real world case 2.2 How is this situation complicated by not having all of the facilities linked into a common EHR? Every patient currently has their own EHR and health record number at each location. When businesses unite on a single electronic health record system, the problem becomes more complicated since patients may have health record numbers at more than one location. Whom would the HIM director have to work with to make an EMPI project successful? To ensure the success of the EMPI project, the HIM director would need to collaborate with several other departments. This would begin with patient registration, which is where the health record number is most frequently generated. The information systems department would be critical in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of the EMPI and EHR. The initiative and the danger of duplicate records would need to be communicated to patient care departments. What are the advantages to all facilities of having a shared health record number? Patient care is the key benefit of all establishments having a single health record number. Access to the patient's information from several locations provides the clinician with a complete view of the patient's history and conditions. This results in better decision-making and multidisciplinary care among providers. A shared health record number should aid in the identification of patients and their demographic information.
