Interprofessional Communication and Leadership in Healthcare Reflection
August 12, 2023
Part One: Working Style
In my Interprofessional Communication and Leadership in Healthcare class, I was tasked to
complete the 5 Dynamics Assessment. My 5 Dynamics Assessment report revealed that “I am a
rational and pragmatic individual whose energy increases when analyzing historical data and
when pushing hard for results.” It further revealed that I have only two levels of intensity. For the
explore and the excite energy, my intensity level falls in the category deliberate while in my
examine and execute energy, my intensity level falls in the effortless category. As I continued to
read through the report, I discovered that my two strengths were in the examine and execute
energy. It went on to explain that I perform naturally in this dynamic and I move in and out of
both areas with ease. I find this analysis to be accurate. I like structure and organization. When
things are chaotic, I always try to find a way to bring order. When I have clientele who needs a
dress or outfit made, I always complete my projects in a timely fashion and give enough time in
between should the client have any last-minute requests. My challenges were in the explore and
excite energy. According to the report, it takes a bit of effort for me to move through this
dynamic. Although I complete the required actions, it requires me to take conscious application. I
agree with this analysis as well. I prefer not to be the individual who comes up with the initial
idea. I tend to “drag my feet” until someone else comes up with an idea. I always find more
pleasure in building and adding to the idea.
When it comes to learning, the report stated that “traditional learning and teaching are tailored to
my style, enabling success in most learning environments. Learning can become an effort when
content or presentations are disorganized or too anecdotal.” This analysis goes hand in hand with
my examine energy. I work better when things are structured. It is hard for me to keep focus
when things are chaotic. This would be the reason why I would want my teammate to possess the

explore and excite energy. They can create new ideas and be imaginative. They are full of energy
and enthusiasm. They pick up where I lack and my collaboration with these two energies will
yield incredible results.
Part Two: Communication
My friend of over fifteen years is in the process of opening her dental practice. She called me to
vent about some of the hardships she has faced but also to get my opinion on a matter. At the
beginning of the conversation, I actively listened and allowed her to express herself without any
feeling of judgment. This placed me in the authenticity level of the conversation. I am listening
to learn about the experiences she has been facing in her process. I am listening to gain factual
details from her perspective. In this phase of the conversation, I am on Rung 1 (content) of the
ladder of listening. As the conversation continued, she asked me if I would give her a review on
Google. I automatically told her of course I would since she has extended her services to my
family and myself for years before opening her own dental office. She was very appreciative of
my response. According to my friend, she previously asked several people, and they were
hesitating about doing a review. In this part of the conversation, I placed myself on Rung 2
(compassion) of the ladder. I knew how it feels when the support you expect is not what you
receive, especially when you are always giving of yourself.
In my experience, actively listening to my friends during conversations has been beneficial. It
shows that I am paying attention and that I care about their well-being. It offers them comfort
because their feelings and emotions are valid. I give them the time they need to express
themselves without interruptions. It helps to strengthen our bond and trust with one another.
In a conversation with my friend, she tells me that the same individual that did not want to leave
her a review reached out for more dental advice. I now had the opportunity to speak. I felt it was
