HIS 100 Project Template Use this template to address the steps in your Project Guidelines and Rubric. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Ensure that you have considered your instructor’s feedback when revising your work. Proofread the entire document before submitting. Part 1: Creating a Research Question 1. Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic. The topic of the creation of Earth Day is interesting to me for many reasons. I aspire to be more environmentally conscious so a topic regarding environmental protections and some of its origins seemed like it could help me with my personal mission. 2. Discuss the significance of your historical research question in relation to your current event. It is a possibility that the UN climate change summits may not be a thing without a nationally recognized effort for environmentalism such as Earth Day. As a result of Earth Day, how have federal regulations positively affected climate change in recent years? 3. Explain how you used sources to finalize your research question. I researched answers for my question and sought credible sources when doing so. I checked for measurable data and results that could be backed up with other credible sources. Part 2: Building Context to Address Questions 1. Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event. The UN climate change summits, specifically COP26 in 2021, presented the possibility of multiple different governments and belief systems agreeing on common goals which is like Earth Day in the way that it was materialized—a problem was identified and addressed with the public and private government to find solutions through goals and federal regulations. 2. Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. Senator Nelson had always pushed for environmental issues, but few were interested in the same issues, he was inspired by the Vietnam war teach-ins and sought to use a similar strategy to gain support for environmental rights. He planned a national teach-in and thousands of people showed interest, he traveled the country delivering speeches in which he created a sense of unity and community. He met with activists across the country and created the Environment Teach-In, Inc to coordinate the national efforts. 3. Explain the historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event. Nelson’s environmental advocacy stemmed from his childhood in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. He enjoyed the adventures he had through the Wisconsin forests among other things and wanted to preserve the beauty and health of the land. The oil spill in Santa Barbara of 1969 only escalated these feelings the senator had about protecting the environment. Part 3: Examining How Bias Impacts Narrative 1. Describe a narrative you identified while researching the history of your historical event. 1
Senator Nelson, the Father of Earth Day, inspired Earth Day and worked hard to get the support for the movement. 2. Articulate how biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what is known or unknown about history. biased perspectives leave room for omission and inflated facts. The recorded history could be one sided when it is heavily biased and future readers will only get the one side. The Founding Fathers, for example, declared that every man was created equal, and my grade school history teacher made it sound so true when what they really meant was all men were created equal except for anyone who wasn’t white and male. They signed this while slavery is protected by law in all 13 colonies and some of the signers had their own slaves ( The Founding Fathers Views of Slavery , 2023). So, it was true to them that men were created equal but the people that were enslaved would tell a different story. 3. Identify the perspectives that you think are missing from your historical event’s narrative. During this time in the late 60s, the Vietnam war is taking place outside and inside there are citizens who are fighting for their rights. Perspectives from the Black and Mexican Americans and Indigenous people, who are known to appreciate and respect the land before any movement needed to take place, are missing. Part 4: Connecting the Past with the Present 1. Explain how researching its historical roots helped improve your understanding of your current event. The UNFCC 2. Articulate how questioning your assumptions, beliefs, and values may benefit you as an individual. Only entertaining what you are already comfortable with will make you complacent and you may forget to check new information for accuracy especially if it something you feel you already know or already have strong opinions about. Questioning your assumptions and beliefs will keep you on your toes and may lessen your bias. 3. Discuss how being a more historically informed citizen may help you understand contemporary issues. Being more historically informed may help you identify patterns more easily or recognize a familiar issue as well as the reasons or why it became problematic. This could lead to better solutions that address the problems. Past events could help you understand why something is happening like the war between Ukraine and Russia. Amid the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukrainians voted for and achieved their Independence this did not fare well with Mother Russia. The recent transgressions against Ukraine are products of resentment. 2
