Report
Priority Event/Person/Term Brief Description Justification 1 The Holocaust Began in 1941. After occupying Poland in 1939 the Nazis also expanded concentration camps into forced labor camps where overwork starvation and disease killed thousands of thousands of Jews Gypsies’, Poles, Russians, and others the Nazis classified as “subhuman”. The defeat of Germany revealed appalling evidence of the evil at the heart of the Nazi ideology of racial superiority. This was a turning point in history in general due to eyes being opened to the horrific encounters that had been happening in Germany. 2 The Atomic Bombs August 1945 Japans ferocious defense of Okinawa had confirmed American fears that the Japanese would fight to the death. Americans wondered if unconditional surrender was worth another six or nine months of bitter fighting in contrast using the bomb to end the conflict quickly would ensure that the United States could occupy Japan without Soviet participation. 3 The Great Depression August 1929 – March 1933 The Wall Street crash marked the beginning of the depression, but it did not cause it. It was also the insurance policy that western Europeans required if they were to accept the dangers as well as the benefits of a revived Germany. 5 Social Security Act Passed August 14, 1935 The Great Depression moved the United States to accept the idea that the federal government should protect the poor and unemployed. Even so the law was a compromise framed by nonpartisan committee of business labor and public representatives and then weekend by congregational conservatives. It provided unemployment compensation, old age pensions, and aid for dependent mothers and children of the blind. 6 The Atlantic Charter Released by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill on August 14, 1941. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met secretly to map out military strategy and goals for a post war world. They agreed that the defeat of Germany was their priority and Japan was secondary. Their joint proclamation known as the Atlantic charter provided a political umbrella for American involvement in the war. 7 The Truman Doctrine March 12, 1947 President Harry Truman’s statement in 1947, that the United States should assist other nations that were facing external pressure or internal revolution; an important step in the escalation of the Cold War 8 Upton Sinclair One of America's most famous muckraking journalists. Won his greatest recognition with the 1906 publication of his historical novel The Jungle, which graphically depicted the retched
