Daya Trevizo Professor Adams HIST 1302.924 21 OCT 2023 Spanish Flu Epidemic The importance of learning about history is to prevent history from repeating itself. In this day and age we were all impacted by the corona virus epidemic. The corelations between pandemics in the 1900s have astonishing similarities when comparing the deaths of COVID 19 in comaparison to the Spanish Flu epidemic as far bacteria and the origin of the epidemic , but the numbers do not compare as the Spanish Flu Epidemic took the life of 50-100 million people whereas COVID 19 took the life of 6.9 million people. This raises the question of whether technological advancements can prevent the deaths of millions of people or if the lack of cooperation to the FDC rules led to the spread of the corona virus. In the article published by Salvador Macip called “Modern Epidemics” it explains the phases of how an epidemic begins it is broken down into six phases the first being “detection of microbe in animals” and the sixth phase being “disease in multiple regions .” In the article Modern Epidemics, it explains how the diseases are measured by an RO system which impacts the likelihood of of a disease being able to be spread. In comaparison measles had a RO of 14-18 whereas the spanish flu had an RO of 1.3-3 so why was it that the spanish flu epidemic led to so many deaths and how this disease spread to multiple regions. During the spanish flu epidemic, we lacked the information necessary to prevent the spread of this disease. The rapid spread was influenced from factors such as the World war 1 and World war 2 along with the lack of healthcare workers and available technology in an article released by the Pan American Health Organization the rapid deaths were so rapid that health care providers could not keep up and quote was released that states In some cases the dead were left in their homes for days. Private undertaking houses were overwhelmed, and some were
taking advantage of the situation by hiking prices as much as 600 percent. Complaints were made that cemetery officials were charging fifteen-dollar burial fees and then making the bereaved dig the graves for their dead themselves. This along with the H1N1 having a high mortality rate led to the death of millions of people. This raises the question of whether a pandemic with av mortality rate of the Spanish Flu Epidemic will occur again and if this is inevitable. In an article published by the National Library of Medicine it explains why the Ebola Virus was able to be isolated primarily in one region despite a vaccine not being developed and the article emphasizes that it was due to the emphasis of quarantine and the immediate shut down of traveling. The article states “ For example, during the EVD epidemic, Canada denied visas to individuals from countries with EVD outbreaks, against international health regulations ( 20 ) . In the USA, quarantining of healthcare workers who had worked in West Africa was inconsistent and politically motivated .” This outbreak was isolated through strategic quarantine frame works. When comparing all these pandemics it raises the question on why Americans were so slow to act and follow FDC protocol and failed to follow quarantine rules. Despite an outbreak being inevitable due to the bacteria that is constantly developing, history shows that we can counteract the spread of these diseases. The Spanish Flu Epidemic should be a reminder of the negative effects that a lack of a framework can lead to a massive number of deaths. This can further let us appreciate the innovative technology being created and the increase in health care workers. While also not making the same mistakes that were made during the most recent pandemics where many members of society did not want take part in quarantine rules or resources such as the vaccine.
