7.06H Genocide Honors Assessment Only complete this assignment if you are enrolled in Honors credit. You must earn at least a 60% on this assignment. Name: Mason Evans Date: November 9, 2023 Step 1: Choose one event and give a summary in one complete paragraph. Your task is to research one o f these cases where people decided to fight back or resist. Summarize the event in one complete paragraph and describe how they were upstanders. - In 1944 a group of prisoners at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp decided to rebel after discovering they would be executed. Young Jewish women would smuggle gunpowder into the crematorium from the nearby munitions factory, Weichsel-Union- Metallwerke. Using this gunpowder the Jewish prisoners planned to destroy the crematorium along with the gas chambers to launch a revolt. On October 7th, 1944, they would launch the revolt, unfortunately this revolt was snuffed out quickly by the Germans. Around 250 prisoners died during the fighting and 200 were executed afterward. The Germans were able to find 4 female Jewish prisoners who had supplied the gunpowder used to blow up the crematorium and they were also executed. - The resistance at Auschwitz was a great attempt at weakening the German forces and although they were stopped they were able to stand against their oppressors. The courage it took to take this action along with the unity involved between the prisoners that made and executed the plan is a great example of how groups can be brought together in times of turmoil. Step 2: One complete paragraph describing the Evian Conference and explaining what your decision would have been at that event. W rite one complete paragraph on the proceedings at the Evian Conference in 1938. Broadly speaking, the major military powers of the world saw the German leadership's intention to invade their neighbors and the beginning of genocidal policies. They had two very broad decisions, they
could either: Increase the number of refugees they let in to save lives, which risked German spies coming in and worsening unemployment in their countries, or keep the refugee quota the same? Send troops to stand up to Germany, risking making the same mistake as World War I, or continue to use diplomacy? Though the conference was largely unsuccessful, you will need to make a decision that was not made. In a one paragraph reflection, choose which decision you would have made as a participant of the Evian Conference. Explain why you made this decision. - I believe increasing the quotas for refugees would have been the proper decision in this scenario. Although the risk of German spies is there, it is better than risking millions of lives on an invasion of Germany. The space was available as the only country to increase its quota was the Dominican Republic, one of the smallest countries in the Evian Conference. Increasing quotas would allow for the refugees to be spread fairly evenly throughout many countries and certain security measures could have been taken to snuff out spies. Even if spies did get through the spreading of refugees would isolate them and save millions of Jewish lives while they continued to work towards peace.
