List your historical research topic here:
My historical research topic is the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Disaster of 1986.
Graded portion:
Distinguish between primary and secondary sources.
The difference between primary and secondary sources are that primary sources were written in
the timeframe that the event occurred. For instance, a primary source for the Chernobyl disaster
would have been written by someone during 1986. Additionally, the source could have been
written in 2000 by an eyewitness account. However, a secondary source would be something
that was written after the event occurred by someone who was not a participant or eyewitness.
Explain why it is important to consult a variety of sources when conducting historical research. Include
specific details and examples.
When performing research it is critical to consult a variety of sources for numerous reasons.
Historians use a variety of sources to get a complete
and accurate picture of the event as it
occurred. By using different sources you are presented with multiple views of an event as it
occurred. For example when researching a war
using information from both sides may provide a
better picture and understanding of the event.

Identify one
primary
source that would help investigate your research question (include the title, author,
and link to the source).
One primary source that would help my research questions is a book written by David R Marples
called “Chernobyl and Nuclear Power.” Marples finished writing this book just six weeks after the
disaster of Reactor 4 exploding. Marple was the leading expert in North America at the time on

A secondary source would be “How the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster Shaped Russia and Ukraine’s
Modern History” written by James Rodgers,

disaster-shaped-russia-and-ukraines-modern-history/?sh=45b4ac64539a. This would be
considered a secondary source as Rodgers was not a participant or an eyewitness of the event.
Rodgers is a research journalist who has written several books on international affairs to include
“Assignment Moscow: Reporting on Russia from Lenin to Putin” (Rodgers, 2022)
Choose a current event related to the subject of your historical research question and explain how they
are connected.
A current event that is related to by research question is the current occupation of the
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. The Russian military has occupied the location
since early March. Due to the current war efforts, there have been several incidents where key
infrastructure at the location has been struck by artillery shelling of which both Russia and
