Tools: DMAIC
The article speaks about DMAIC - Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. The
DMAIC cycle is inherent to Six Sigma and describes the basic logic of a data-centric process
improvement approach (Gijo, 2011). In this article, Six Sigma and lean thinking are integrated
and applied simultaneously to identify and eliminate disruptions in Order to Receipt times of an
aerospace engine Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. Six sigma DMAIC phases
are applied systematically to each of the lean stages (Hill et al, 2017). Think and prepare, specify
value, synchronize internal value, stream create flow, pull on demand, and create perfection are
the various lean stages described in the article. The output of the define phase of lean stage 1
feeds into the input of the measure stage within lean stage 1. This continues with the output of
the measure phase feeding into the analyze phase and so on forming a series of linked activities
inside lean stage1. At the end of lean stage 1, the output of the control stage of DMAIC feeds
into the define phase of the next lean stage (Hill et al, 2017).
Please find attached the lean & Six Sigma integration flow diagram.
Standard deviation:
No, the article does not speak about standard deviation.
Mean, median, mode, and range:
The article uses mean (average) to calculate the average Order to Return days and Late
Calls days in the results section (Hill et al, 2017). Median, mode and range are not listed in the
article. Median, in statistics, is the middle value of a given list of data points when arranged in an
order. Mode is the value which occurs the maximum number of times in a data set. Range is the
difference between the lowest and highest values.
Learnings from the article:
The integrated lean six sigma framework allows simultaneous deployment of both the
lean and six sigma phases with the aim that the company simultaneously tackles both the waste
reduction element and the Critical to Quality element of the business. This approach has several
benefits to businesses through its dual focus on reducing waste and increasing value while
resolving critical to quality issues that affect consistency and repeatability in a product and
process. Six Sigma feeds into and supports the higher level strategic lean implementation
process. Six Sigma forms part of a subset of operational strategies that fit into the higher order
lean thinking process (Hill et al, 2017).
