Amazon Aurora is a serverless system database that takes advantage of the cloud computing that the world is going to. Aurora is a database engine that is fully compatible MySQL and PostgreSQL. Fully managed by Amazon’s Regional Database services which helps with automate administrative tasks like, backups, patches, setting up databases, and hardware provisioning. The Aurora system is an on-demand configuring that allows systems to scale higher and lower according to the customer’s needs. One of the key features of this newer system is the separation of computation and storage. Each feature scales independently which has its positives and negatives. On the plus side, as storage needs increase, Aurora scales to the customer’s needs. The disadvantage is the compute side scaling equally. Since it is expensive to run hardware at peak capacity services must constantly be monitored. With resources being constantly in need of being monitored, this leads to things like downtime to perform maintenance for the customers. Aurora Serverless means the customer can run more demanding workloads without the hardware restraints, as it is a cloud based. Cloud computing is the way increased businesses will go in the future, however we have yet to scratch the surface of its capabilities. Yes, it is great that we use it for everything to back up our phone contacts, to playing video games. To me, there is still more we have not even dreamt of. Storing things on the cloud and keeping things up to date in real time is great, but what happens if the server or hardware crashes? That is a lot of data that has been lost for no reason. Serverless systems bring a new light to small businesses. For example, there startup cost of renting, or even buying a server, compared to how things cost on a cloud-based system. It is cheaper and more reliable in the long run.
