2-16. IS system projects begin when someone within the organization recognizes a problem or need within the firm that requires a new or enhanced information system. Once a need has been identified a project proposal will be created which will outline the objectives and scope of the proposal request. Initial resource requirements such as cost, technology, staff participation, and overall project feasibility will be brought forward for consideration. 2-17. Company strategy is very closely connected with a firm’s information systems as it helps in ensuring that the IS systems align with the company core objectives and strategic goals. Strategic goals are very related to an information systems ability to collect, examine, and present data, to higher level management to help them make data driven decisions that best benefit the organization. Efficiency is a key strategy/objective that almost every successful business wishes to prioritize which goes hand and hand with IS systems which can enhance efficiency and productivity throughout the organization. 2-18. Customer loyalty programs have become more and more common in the last decade with almost every major retail chain spending a significant amount of their resources on assuring they keep their loyal customers. One of the most common ways in which this done is major retail chains like Kohls and Macy’s implementing reward point systems for customers which tracks the previous purchases they have made and allows them to collect reword points (Or Kohls cash) that gives them discounts on future purchases. Another common technique that is used by organizations to keep their current consumers is by tracking their previous purchases and creating customized recommendations based on items they have boughten in the past. This is particularly common in e-commerce organizations like Amazon and Walmart which have advanced shopping websites that customers browse. 2-19. The first step that Jim should take is to begin the system planning and selection phase of the SDLC, which would include connecting with key stakeholders within the organization. These stakeholders would include upper management, finance, and marketing, in order for Jim to gain a better idea of the organization’s core goals and objectives. By gathering their critical input, Jim can begin to serve as the bridge between business stakeholders and the technical team, ensuring that the business needs align well with the IT requirements. He must begin an in-depth analysis of the existing IT systems, which would include software, hardware, and other analytics tools, that will help him to highlight the strengths and weaknesses that exist within the organization. 2-20. Jim, being a newcomer to the organization is particularly advantages to the proposed project as he will have bring a fresh and unbiased perspective to the table that will allow him to better identify new innovative ideas and solutions that had previously not been thought of. With the guidance of the other more vetted and experienced employees within the organization, Jim is
in a prime position to help align this proposed project to the organizational core strategies and objectives, achieving the best and most beneficial outcome for the business.
