5E Lesson Plan Template Teacher Subject area/course/grade level Driver's Education / 10 - 12th Grade Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students) 5 ) Describe traffic signs and pavement markings that regulate various passing situations. 6 ) Identify traffic signs, traffic signals, and pavement markings as basic types of traffic controls. Objectives Students will be able to identify and describe traffic signs. Differentiation Strategies: How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the needs of those with special needs? Students will be divided into groups so that the overall work can be chunked into more manageable tasks. IEPs will be followed - meaning students that require extra time or limited number of choices will be provided alternative assessments at the end. Information will be provided in several different formats(visual, hands-on, and group) so that students will be able to access and experience information based on their learning style. The 5 Es E Description Engagement For this lesson, we will be defining and recognizing the different types of traffic signs that a driver has to know. In this activity, the learner will be engaged by joining a NearPod and by watching a short video describing how an 18 wheeler wrecks because the driver did not heed the warning sign. After viewing the video, the students will go to the next part of the NearPod where they will answer three open-ended questions. The questions are designed to discuss the video and what the driver did wrong. Additionally, activate the learners prior knowledge of when they have seen drivers not follow traffic signs or signals. E Description Engagement Assessment Students will take a short sign pre-test to discover their prior knowledge of signs and the categories that each sign falls into, such as warning, informational, and regulatory. Based on how students answer the questions the instructor will be able to adjust the lesson and groupings later in the lesson. The pre-test is on the same NearPod. Exploration Traffic signs are visual cues, including regulatory, warning, and informational symbols, strategically placed on roads to convey essential information, regulate traffic flow, and enhance road safety for drivers, pedestrians, and other road users. For this part of the lesson, students will be partnered up based on skill level from pre-assessment quiz (1 higher and lower). 1)They will work with partners to discuss the warning sign picture on the collaboration board slide of the NearPod. Then the groups will answer the collaboration board question as a group. 2) The second activity that students will work on in groups is the matching pairs of signs to the sign types. First, I will observe how well they are collaborating and working within the partner situation (may be some that do or do not need to work together in future). Students will also be asked probing questions to further clarify their understanding of the subject matter. Explanation The presentation used for this part of the lesson will also be found in the NearPod. The presentation will feature all three different types of signs that students must be able to recognize, which include regulatory, informational, and warning signs. Additionally, besides just a description of the different signs students will be shown several different pictures of each type in order to recognize common themes associated with each type of sign. Below are the questions that students should be able to answer at the end of the assignment: 1) What are regulatory signs? 2) What are the common colors associated with regulatory signs? What are the exceptions? 3) What are warning signs? 4) What are the common colors associated with warning signs? What are the exceptions? 5) What are informational signs? 6) What are the common colors associated with informational signs? E Description Elaboration Students will be divided into groups and asked to create a presentation using Google Slides (this technology chosen because the school provides chromebooks). Students will be tasked with creating a route from school to the closest major city (Decatur, AL). Along that route they will take a virtual tour using Google Maps street view. While going on the virtual trip they will be tasked with trying to find 2 examples of each type of sign (warning, informational, and regulatory). The students will then submit work to be grade based on rubric which will be provided to them ahead of time. Example of student work: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vShejexW2Gx6LxhYPu Y-sWvuiy7p6EH9YPCin4Ziqz23kA7IWqIGhzy3tpfB2dcxZGTLM6h8ZydlQO c/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000 The second activity will be for students to create an infographic about traffic signs. The students will select one particular type of sign (informational, warning, regulatory) and create an infographic on that type. The students will be required to provide at least three pictures of different signs within their category. Additionally, the students will be required to provide a short description of the three different types of signs. The Kahoot is designed to test their knowledge of regulatory, warning, and informational signs. By the end of this Kahoot they should be able to recognize signs correctly into their sign type. https://create.kahoot.it/details/973c7d28-e24e-4735-b52c-fb8fbe6aa9f3 The following rubric will be used to formally assess students’ group projects: Page 3 of 5
