Servant leadership focuses on serving others and meeting their needs. They prioritize the development of their team members. Servant leaders encourage collaboration, empathy, and active listening. As a servant leader we want to support our team  to their full potential. Other leadership models will prioritize different aspects such as power, authority, and achieving certain goals. This leadership model is where the leader makes direct decisions without as much emphasis on serving others. Servant leadership models will foster more of a positive environment. They want to see others grow and succeed. They want to build a strong relationship that is loyal, trustworthy, and that in the end will motivate more engagement and productivity for the team. In contrast with other leadership models they may focus more on achieving specific outcomes and maintaining that control. This approach could be effective in certain situations. It may not always put first the well being and growth of your team members. I feel that overall that servant leadership models stand out on serving others by promoting the positive development of team members. This can create an empowering work environment that can have long lasting benefits for both the leader and the team. Isn’t that what we want? We want to be able to have that mindset to create that everyone feels valued and empowered. I hope to aspire to be that leader. The place that I currently work at is all about servant leadership. She actively listens to our co-workers and she values their input. I have seen it first hand. She wants to encourage everyone to share their ideas and perspectives. She will consider each suggestion and involve the team in the decision making process. To me this shows that our Superintendent values and respects the opinions of others on our team. She supports the growth and development of everyone in our school district. She provides resources, mentorship, guidance, and resources to help each one of us. I have gone to her many times for help even learning a new skill or taking on more responsibilities. She not only encourages me to do so but also provides opportunities for training, connects me with a variety of resources and continues to offer her ongoing support. The more authority leadership would just make decisions without my input or consideration. They would tend to have a more approach of power and authority take over the precedence of their needs and opinions of others. This style of leadership would create a less collaborative work environment. Transactional leadership is a style that sets clear expectations and might provide rewards or consequences based on meeting those expectations. I feel that this leadership style is in the past. The times have changed and we recognized that having more collaboration will find more growth. I think it is great to see this shift towards more of a compassionate and supportive leadership style.
