Leadership Skills and Mindset Reflection Part C Leadership is the ability to provide direction and support to others through communication that can inspire and empower others. A leader leads by their actions and behaviors rather than by using their superior status to motivate others to achieve success. A manager is a title that notices one’s authority. Managers communicate by means of policies and expectations. Leaders can help one identify their strengths to use an influence of change. They can encourage change by providing support mentorship to others. Doing so can involve taking more risks and require one to maintain self-organization, an increased self-awareness, and stay goal oriented to ensure a job is completed. Whereas a manager focuses more on achieving the task at hand. A manager works effectively with others to direct them in achieving success (WGU,2022.) Three leadership skill that I possess are relationship building, employee motivation, and critical thinking. I exhibit relationship building by being able to get along and work alongside my co-workers. I am able to maintain professionalism, but still be able to get to know my co-workers Introduction Introduction Page 1
and their values to be able to build professional friendships while at work. I exhibit employee motivation by using my ability of a charge nurse to verbally recognize catches and achievement of others within my department and be able to submit their names for “shout outs” for their “job well done.” This will help motivate them to keep striving for the “job well done.” I am able to display critical thinking skills by being able to work along with doctors to help provide process of elimination of being able to work together to help treat patients after initial diagnosis to provide the best individual care to each patient. Three management skills that I possess are active listening, delegating tasks, and coaching/mentoring others. I demonstrate active listening at work by being able to listen to patient talk about what is bothering them and use those skills to rephrase back to them for my understanding of them telling me what is wrong with them so I can effectively communicate that with the doctor prior to the doctor coming to see them so that they can be thinking of ways to make plans of figuring out their chief complaint. I display delegation while at work by assigning rooms based off of acuity to each nurse prior to the shifts starting. I work as a charge nurse and prior to starting my shift, I divide off the rooms that we have so that each nurse have a equal caseload. I display coaching/mentoring by being a preceptor while I am at work. I have a student that I help mentor a few weeks during their final semester of school. I allow the student to practice being a nurse and help coach them to help them succeed in the field. Introduction Page 2
Three leadership skills that I currently lack and can improve on are conflict management, creativity, and negotiation. Conflict management is difficult for me as I do not like to disagree and become timid when it comes to communication difference. I can improve on this skill by using resources that help me identify conflicts and helps break down solutions to resolve conflicts so that I can work on doing those in my practice of nursing. I lack creativity because I like to do this straight to the point. I can increase my creativity by taking continuing ed courses on ways to improve the resources available to patients of different backgrounds when they come into the department that I work in. There currently isn’t any paper resources for patient to be able to identify their preference and I can create ways by looking up helpful recourses to provide to administration to help change that for the patients. I also lake negotiation skills. I can improve of these skills by improving my communication skills in ways of trying to be the one to lead the conversation with others rather than the conversation being bought to me. That way I can feel more comfortable by feeling like I am the one more in control of the situation. Three management skills that I currently lack and can improve on are conflict resolution, flexibility, and decision making. I can improve on conflict resolution by taking my emotions out of the situation and focus on the facts. I can improve my flexibility skills by trying to assist with attending meeting within the department that branch into improving our department Introduction Page 3
performance. I normally choose not to go to the meeting because I would rather stay in the department and continue working. This also would help with my decision-making skills by making me think about the pros and cons of the situations that are bought to the department and make my decision based on the best possible outcome. Part D Having a leadership mindset is important because it creates the values of who you are professionally. It governs how you treat others, work with other by inspiring and empowering them, and how you can influence them to work on their strength to make the work place successful. A leadership mindset can not only impact yourself but those you work with. A leadership mindset can support long term personal growth by being able to identify things that you struggle with internally and improving on those things to become a better you and more influential person within the workplace. Two examples would be increasing my self confidence and self-care. I can work on increasing my self confidence to increase my communication with others by looking up resources and tools available on effective communication and conflict resolution resources. I can increase my self-care by incorporating regular exercise and healthy eating habits back into my weeks. I notice to have increased anxiety when I lack on exercise and eat “quick” meal rather than spending time in the kitchen and walking like I had been. A leadership mindset can help support long term professional growth by how you can make Introduction Page 4
positive change within the work place and with your co-workers. Two examples of long-term profession growth are making a habit of working towards making a positive impact on your co- workers and it can influence your future career opportunities. Making a positive impact on your co-workers can lead to satisfaction within the workplace by increasing trust within each other, working towards a common goal and not feeling like a co- worker couldn’t trust me because of me trying to “out do” them and seek to be better than them. It can lead to over all higher satisfaction with oneself and within the department. It can also influence future career opportunities because it could create jobs of higher authority because of the traits and skills that I possess that can be more beneficial than being “just a manager” and showing that I care more than just about the position. Part E Ensuring that equity and inclusivity is important as a leader because it can help make the department more successful because it is ensuring that the patients and workers are being respected, valued, and heard. Two ways that I can ensure that I can implement equity and inclusivity is deepen my self-awareness by being aware of unconscious bias and by working on increasing cultural competency within the department that I work in. I can deepen my self- awareness of unconscious bias by taking self-assessment periodically and utilizing the results to work on researching tools to help learn ways to work on my weaker areas. I can work on Introduction Page 5
increasing cultural competency within the department that I work in by talking with my manager on having “in service” presentations on recognizing cultural differences, ways to understand cultural differences, and practices to use to ensure that cultural differences aren’t being belittled and working on being diminished with the department.
