1. Conduct some research on employee participation and empowerment on your own. Tell the class what you learned and where you found it (URL). In researching employee participation and empowerment, I’ve learned that employee participation is a “philosophy practiced by companies that give their employee a stake in decisions that directly affect their jobs while employee empowerment is a corporate structure that allows non-managerial employees to make autonomous decisions”, (Richardson, 2022). Each is a distinct practice and are mutually exclusive with one another. Allowing employees to participate in making or assisting with information to make important decisions regarding an organization improves their morale and can lead to the increase in productivity and quality of product. Employees can work together to innovate and problem solve based on their role in the company and where the areas of concern lye. Resources: Richardson , O. E., IV (2022, July 27). Don't most employees want to do their primary jobs, collect a check, and go home? Explain. Most employees who do not care about their place of employment do only their role to collect a check and go home. They either do so because it is what is available to them and they need or have financial responsibilities, or even if they don’t have financial responsibilities, only do so for the money. They do not realize that their presence and production are important and maybe are not shown by the employer. On the other hand, there are employees who do value their job, they are empowered by the employer to participate and provide useful information and suggestions, and although they still collect a check and go home, they realize that their involvement with the organization is needed and valued. B. How were the employees at Johnson Sausage finally empowered? Did empowerment make a significant difference at Johnson? Why? The employees of Johnson Sausage were not aware of the issues within the company. Their production was based on them obtaining a job, learning their role, and performing. They were following procedures to get the job done, rather than participating fully in the experience to learn
the areas that needed improvement. Finally, they were given the opportunity to interact directly with customers and then came to realize the extent of the issues. They took responsibility for their performance and production. They found ways to improve and what needed to be done. They were given the trust to do so, and they overcame any hesitations and found what areas needed instant fixtures. The exposure provided to them to do this helped them to find the solutions needed, the empowerment and involvement to work together and directly with the product and found the way to better and grow. The encouragement placed in their hands enabled them to become better managed, organized, and profitable. It opened up the culture within the organization to continue to develop and employees were held responsible for their work, which led them to feel valued and heard by the management. 3. For you personally, do you consider employee empowerment and participation important?  Would you take a job where you are not empowered? I do consider empowerment and participation important for all employees within an organization. Management is responsible for the background roles within the company and their focus are numbers, paperwork, progress. While the employees working the product are experiencing first hand, hands on. Employees who value and are valued will pay close attention to the quality and can provide valuable feedback on what improvements must be made to be productive and profitable. I personally would not take a job where I am not empowered. Doing so would make me one of those who just work for a paycheck and would hinder my own growth and development. 4. Are you empowered at your present job or past employment? A. If you are empowered, provide one detailed example of how you are empowered. B. If you are not empowered, describe one way you could be empowered. I have been lucky enough to hold positions where I am empowered and involved with the companies I have worked for. I have been trusted with improving policies and procedures within the department I worked, and along with the entire company. Some examples are my responsibility with creating an OSHA folder with all information, correcting areas that were not or did not meet OSHA, creating a training handbook for departments, and now meeting with judges. 5. Based on what you read and researched, would you consider employee empowerment and participation the foundation of organizational development? Explain. Yes, most definitely. I have learned and grown in my own experiences by being empowered and allowed to participate to better organizations I have worked for. My past employer once told me that if the employees are happy and involved, the quality of their work will be happy and successful. Employees are the family of the company and there is no one better to provide valuable information and suggestions to a company’s improvement than the source itself.
