Chapter 8 Assignment
1.
Please refer to the section in the book on Situational Analysis (Sec 8.2). Conduct a SWOT analysis for MTSU undergraduate education, listing at least two factors per category.
Strengths: (1) Staff expertise – MTSU has a highly skilled and dedicated faculty that provide great
quality education to students. (2) Industry collaboration – MTSU has connections to many top tier organizations and an extensive alumni network to provide networking opportunities for current and former students.
Weaknesses: (1) Remote class availability – MTSU falls short on making classes more remote-
friendly to better allow opportunities for non-traditional students to be able to complete degree requirements around life commitments such as full-time jobs and childcare. (2) High operating cost – an average of 9 credits per semester costs close to $4000, making a degree unattainable for middle class residents that don’t qualify for financial assistance due to higher than accepted income, but don’t make quite enough to easily manage paying out of pocket. Opportunities: (1) Remote class offerings – more remote learning availability to assist in non-
traditional working adults getting degrees. (2) Collaborations with local organizations to assist current experienced employees to gain degrees to improve their existing career at their firms.
Threats: (1) Economic standing – inflation and other economic points that make it difficult to easily lower costs of education. (2) Competition – other universities are now working to provide better opportunities for remote learning, causing potential students that don’t have flexible hours to choose somewhere other than MTSU.
2.
Based on your SWOT, what are four specific recommended actions that MTSU can use to improve and grow? Be specific.
(1)
MTSU can tap into a broader market of students by expanding the availability of remote classes, prioritizing them for non-traditional students.
(2)
Focus on fundraising and budget scaling with an aim to lower fees per semester to assist the segment of middle-class students.
(3)
Work with local businesses to provide incentives for their employees lacking degrees in their established careers to achieve that educational goal through MTSU at discounted rates and accommodated timelines working with their business hours. For example, an accounting firm could partner with MTSU to give priority to future graduates in hiring in exchange for discounted programs for their current employees to have the opportunity to better themselves and thus better their workplace without sacrificing productivity to attend classes.
(4)
Marketing can be enhanced to reach more people that normally may not consider having time for a degree. Going hand in hand with my other recommendations above, expanding the remote class availability and making it less cost-prohibitive with workplace partnerships to help promote, further marketing strategies can be put in place to help the community know there are options for life improvement through a degree track no matter your background or age.
3.
What factors in MTSU’s External Macro and External Micro influenced your recommendations? Explain.
The element of technology and demographics are heavy influences in my recommendations to
expand MTSU’s purview to the community at large using advances that allow for better collaboration remotely, allowing a market segment that could benefit from a higher education but that may not have the traditional time and money to attend a college otherwise. This also hits on the micro elements of competition from other schools that have become more advanced in reaching those segments that MTSU has trouble in. Furthermore, the Customers who would
