In Phase 1 of the D160 CPE activities, we were tasked with creation of the CPE schedule, holding the HIP team meeting, the stakeholder meeting, kickoff meeting, leadership meeting, review and modification of the communication plan, and completion of the NAHQ modules. Since my HIP is the development and implementation of an educational program for our nursing and sales teams, the HIP team had been meeting for several months already. As we approached closer to implementation, these team meetings moved from monthly to weekly to ensure forward progress in the development and allow for quick response to needed changes and challenges. The initial stakeholder meeting occurred several months ago for the team to gain approval for the HIP. The stakeholder and leadership meetings for the D160 activities were more of check-ins to ensure all stakeholders and impacted leaders were aware of the current progress and were still in support of the project. Since the team has been meeting for a long period of time at this point, the communication plan has been tested and shown to be effective. The review of the communication plan was more of a formality to ensure that we are ready for go-live of the educational program and have a process in place to report progress and successes of the program.
The final component of Phase 1 was the completion of the NAHQ modules and the narrative account of how the project met the four domains. While I have completed the NAHQ modules previously in another class, it was a good review and took more time than I originally anticipated. Reviewing the competencies in the NAHQ modules helped me identify how the HIP could be expanded in the future and how it currently meets the four domains within our learning modules.
The CPE activities for D160 were a lot more involved than they originally appeared but will help my project be more successful both now and in the future.

Complaints have come to the department manager regarding timeliness of requests for patient information and a decision must be made.
Three months ago, Community Hospital opened a 24-hour urgent-care center 10 miles away in a rapidly growing community. Kent Jones, the health information services manager, took part in the planning that included the use of a combined record and one patient identification number. The decision was made to allow electronic sharing of patient records between the facilities; however, at present it is necessary to fax some portions of the record upon request. In the past month, Kent has received four complaints from the urgent care center that records were not faxed in a timely manner.
There are 26 employees in health information services. Three full-time employees care for record activity during the day, with one employee devoted to record activity during the evening shift, when a team leader and four other employees are usually in the department. During the…

“This isn’t what I need!” objected the admissions officer at Northwest Regional Hospital. Judy sighed, “But this is the software you asked us to create for you.” “I don’t care what I said at the time, this system won’t work for us the way you have it set up. You’ll have to fix it.” “But any fixes are going to set this project back at least four months,” Judy warned. “Why don’t you work with it for a while and get used to the features? I’m sure you’ll find that it works fine.” Judy’s attempt at reassurance just set off an even more negative response from the admissions officer: “Look, we needed the registration screens in a different format. I can’t read this one. And on top of that, it’s missing the insurance check function.” “But you didn’t ask for any of those features last April when we developed the specifications for the system.” “At the time, I didn’t know they were available. Since then, we got new information and some new federal regulations. You’ll have to make big changes…

When Ford CEO Alan Mulally arrived at the company in 2006 after a long career at Boeing, he was shocked to learn that the company produced one Ford Focus for Europe and a totally different one for the United States. “Can you imagine having one Boeing 737 for Europe and one 737 for the United States?” he said at the time. Due to this product strategy, Ford was unable to buy common parts for the vehicles, could not share development costs, and couldn't use its European Focus plants to make cars for the United States, or vice versa. In a business where economies of scale are important, the result was high costs. Nor were these problems limited to the Ford Focus. The strategy of designing and building different cars for different regions was the standard approach at Ford.
Ford's long-standing strategy of regional models was based upon the assumption that consumers in different regions had different tastes and preferences, which required considerable local customization. Americans, it was…

Biscuits and skill: Biscuit making in Britain and Germany
This is taken from a study of biscuit manufacture in ten (10) British and eight (8) German firms. The type of biscuits produced varied greatly between the two (2) countries, largely owing to national tastes and demand. In Britain demand concentrated on relatively basic biscuits: either plan or with simple coating of chocolate, cream, or jam. In Germany, there was a much higher demand for decorated and multi-textured products (soft biscuits with jam filling in chocolate cases or layered variegated biscuits). Since this affected the type of biscuits each firm produced, it was difficult to measure and compare output and productivity between the British and German factories. An examination of crude output figures indicated that at the British factories employees were 25 percent more productive than German employees largely because British firms produced large quantities of simple low quality biscuits. However, when productivity…
