McGregor examined individual behavior in a work environment. His theory X and theory Y based on human behavior in management. Theory X presumes that employees are unmotivated and do not like to perform extra-role behavior. They are only motivated by money or any benefit they need; they only work what to do based on the policy and have to be controlled, forced, and threatened to deliver what should be done. They need to be supervised at every step, with control-put in place. Theory Y presumes that employees are motivated to fulfill goals, and created by the desire to realize their potential. They enjoy working with extra responsibilities and do not need much direction; they are self- disciplined and want to complete tasks, and solve work problem immediately. The managers that I have dealt with in my organization belong to theory Y. I have one supervisor and one manager. They both are motivated and keep people in their teams moving forward in any circumstances. My managers tend to be more widely appropriate, so people at a lower level, such as me and my co-workers, are involved in decision-making and have more responsibility. There is a predominance of Theory Y managers in my organization because they are suited to knowledge work and professional service; even highly structured knowledge work, such as call center operations, can benefit. They encourage knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. My work environment is organized around wider areas of skill and
knowledge, so the managers are encouraged to develop expertise and make suggestions and improvements. Hi Matt, Thank you for sharing your idea. However, which theory would you like to be involved? And I do not agree with you that the Air Force or Aviation and Special Operations units are more populated with theory Y. Have you been in the Air Force? Everything has both sides. I do not negate that every work organization have these both Theory X and Y or some managers will use mix of both theories. However, I have seen more Theory Y managers in my entire career. In my opinion, if we have a mix both theory X and Y managers, we will be successful. Hi Holmes, Thank you for sharing your post. I do not agree with you that there is only theory X management in the military. Since most of the military is task-oriented, they would be considered Theory X, but there are Y type managers in the military. X type somehow always creates negative effect such as mentally and will make those organizations to lose good employees. In my opinion, mixing both X and Y type will be perfect, and this mix type will develop the organization. And depending on what situation, the managers will apply X type or Y type to solve those problems.
