Caitlin de Cardenas RED3113 Professor Wendy B. Fields May 22, 2023 Sensational Six- Phonics Phonics is extremely important because it allows individuals to understand the relationship between sounds and letters, which can enhance reading skills. According to the text, “Phonics is a method of instruction that teaches students the systematic relationship between the letters and letter combinations (graphemes) in written language and the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken…” (Honig et al., 2008, p.170). It is crucial for students who are studying phonics to have knowledge with phonemic awareness, to understand key concepts of phonics. Learning the relationship between can allow individuals to decode words through phonics instruction. Within these programs of phonics, individuals are taught about implicit and explicit phonics. Implicit phonics is when an individual starts with the whole word and then moves to the smaller parts. For example, by start with the entire word, they are able to find its use through its surroundings or photos. Then the individual can break down the words into syllables. On the other hand, explicit phonics is the opposite which means that the individual will start with the smallest part of the word until they have constructed the whole word (Reading Rockets, 2023). Within the English language, there are many different vowel patterns such as ee, ai, and many more. According to the article Phonics: In Practice by Reading Rockets, different vowel patterns such as VCCV (vowel, consonant, consonant, vowel) and VCV (vowel, consonant, vowel) can help children learn how to decode words (Reading Rockets, 2021). Vowel patterns are not steady with the number of vowels included. However, if they continuously repeat the same sound, then they can include a vowel, along with other consonants. As stated by Cunningham and Cunningham, “Everyone seems to agree that we need to teach phonics, and almost everyone has an opinion about how it should (and should not) be taught” ( Cunningham & Cunningham, 2002). Teaching phonics to children is extremely important because it allows individuals to develop reading skills. Therefore, when children come across vocabulary that they have not seen in the past, such skills can make it easier for them to decode and read the words. “Research over the past 20 years has led to major conclusion about how good readers read well and how children learn to read” (Hall and Moats). By using competencies and standards, individuals can learn skills such as reading, writing, and even speaking. Therefore, after reading the modules and researching further, I decided that the following inform literacy instruction for phonics: Competencies Standard Pre-K LAFS.K.RF.3.3 I chose the competency Pre-K (Pre- Kindergarten) and the standard LAFS.K.RF.3.3. In preschool, students learn basic skills such as letters. Therefore, the standard I chose allows children to apply phonics skills by decoding words.
