EDUC 872- Week 4 - Discussion Thread: Concept-Based Instruction In delving into Brown et al.'s (2014) "Make It Stick," my most significant takeaway is the challenge it poses to conventional beliefs about learning. The text compellingly argues against the efficacy of rote repetition, emphasizing evidence-backed strategies for effective learning (Brown et al., 2014). This has encouraged me as my approach to teaching is based on evidence-based teaching and learning. Concept-based curriculum, as opposed to skill-based or fact-based curriculum, centers on fostering a deep understanding of underlying concepts, encouraging critical thinking and application. Unlike skill-based learning, which often focuses on procedural knowledge, and fact-based learning, which prioritizes memorization, concept-based curriculum aims for a more holistic comprehension of subject matter. I find the concept-based curriculum model appealing due to its emphasis on cultivating a deeper understanding of the material. This approach aligns with the principles discussed in "Make It Stick," advocating for learning strategies that promote retention and application over time (Brown et al., 2014). While I agree with the concept-based model's focus on critical thinking, I also recognize potential challenges in its implementation, such as the need for thoughtful design and effective assessment methods. Transitioning to a more personal perspective, when considering whether Jesus primarily taught through a conceptual or skill-based/factual lens, I lean towards a conceptual approach. Jesus often employed parables and stories to convey deeper spiritual truths, emphasizing understanding and application over mere rote memorization. While there were instances where specific skills or facts were imparted, the overarching teaching style seems rooted in fostering a profound conceptual understanding that transcended mere factual knowledge.
