Week 3 Assignment Activity Repeat the juggling or pen spinning activity for 5 mins and record the number of successive juggles or spins. You will need this number (along with week 1’s number) for a future assignment. 1. How many juggles or spins did you achieve? (1 point) Again, I chose to repeat the pen spinning activity on this part. Once 5 minutes was up, I successfully completed 5 spins and the reason for that is that the pen was flying away was the same as before suggesting that the more complex movements would become easier. Modes of Control 2. Provide an example – different from described in the textbook – of open-loop control. (1 point) E.g. of an open-loop control could be a dance routine for a ballet dancer. The GMP is pre- choreographed before the dance, which makes it a pre-planned program, and doesn’t allow for an adjustment. 3. Provide an example – different from described in the textbook – of closed-loop control. (1 point) E.g. of a closed-loop control can be the use of a needle when sewing. When sewing the needle pricks the user two times, the next sewing stroke, the user makes has to be adjusted so that the needle avoids pricking and injuring the user and allows continuous sewing. Information-Processing Theory Watch the video on the Information-Processing Theory, pick one of the scenarios, and answer the questions related to that scenario. Scenarios A. You are a youth soccer coach and the members of the team do not kick the ball with an advanced movement pattern. You want to assist the players on your team to kick the ball “better” or with a more advanced motor pattern. B. You are a personal trainer and your client works as a delivery driver and reports that his back gets sore at the end of his route. You watch him perform a squat and notice that he does not really squat but bends at the waist. You want to assist your client to perform a squat with “better” form. C. You are a physical medicine professional (e.g., physical therapist, occupational therapist, athletic trainer) and your patient’s left shoulder has been immobilized due to surgery. You want your patient to use their arm to grasp an object, such as glass.
4. Describe two sources of sensory information the person will experience related to the movement they will be performing. That is, what are two sense organs that will provide essential information for person to carry out the movement task? (2 points – 1 for each sensory information) Answer : The two sources of sensory information the individual would experience in case A is through the eyes, through the proprioceptors and all throughout the body. The eyes let the player track the balls location while the ball is being manipulated in the environment, and the proprioceptors let the player track the force that they exert on the ball when they either strike a pass or shoot a goal. 5. Explain what is meant by perception. (1 point) Answer : Perception is defined as the acting of arranging information from the surrounding environment to develop a model which can be visualized in numerous means of sensory input, which lets a person to move efficiently & manipulate in the environment. 6. Why is sensory feedback during and after the execution of the movement essential for motor learning? (2 points) Answer : It is essential because it lets the performer of the movement to know how they’re engaging with their environment, so for the future movements could be finer dialed in or once a skill has been successfully accomplished, it could be replicated numerous times without giving it much thought. 7. Identify a variation of the skill or the context the skill is performed in and explain how one of the parameters may change. (2 points) Answer : Instead of dribbling and running with the ball in a straight line making, all the players weave between obstacles, which will make the young players more skilled at dribbling and moving the soccer ball to avoid the opposing teams’ defense line and other objects that might be in the way. Ecological Approach and Dynamic Systems Approach Watch the videos on the Ecological Approach and Dynamic Systems Approach and answer the questions using the same scenario you chose for the Information-Processing Theory questions. 8. Identify 2 individual structural constraints and how you might modify them to improve the movement. (4 points) Answer : - The first individual structural constraint would be the height advantages in sports such as diving. Shorter individuals will have an easier time diving since there’s much less of them to maneuver in the air, which can make the process of performing intricate dives
