LAB 2 Metrology MECT 1364 Fall 2023 Lab Section 2, Monday 1:00 – 4:00 PM Lab 2 Metrology Student’s Name : David I. Felix. Date Due: Student’s ID : 2267005. (Peoplesoft Student ID) Graded by : . Date Graded:
1 Objective Understand the importance of metrology in manufacturing. Learn various measuring techniques by making measurements and working several metrology problems. 2 Material Required 1) Measuring Instruments: o Steel rule o Outside caliper o Vernier caliper o Protractor o Dial indicator o Sine bar o Gauge blocks o Optical comparator o Thread pitch gauge o Profilometer o Surface comparator plate 2) Samples: o Metal cylinder o Aluminum angle sample o Threaded rod o Alum cylinder MECT 1364 University of Houston, Division of Technology MECT labs 2
Procedure In the lab measurement tools used in engineering were shown and explained how they should be used. Some of these tools were vernier calipers, sine bar, and steel ruler. These tools are used to get precise dimensions of certain aspects of a material such as the diameter, length, and threading. Upon understanding the tools that are used, lab members began to use the steel ruler, vernier caliper, outside caliper, micrometer, comparator plate, and other instruments to measure Specimen K, and Specimen 0.07. These were done in lab groups of 3 to 4 with each member participating in measuring and doing the calculations. MECT 1364 University of Houston, Division of Technology MECT labs 2
