Structural family therapy promotes proactive change which
is healthy and has a focus on structure within the family, the
subsystems, and boundaries. Setting clear boundaries as
well as shifting the hierarchical structure. The clinician
allows for change to accomplish the restructuring and the
reorganization within the family (Minuchin, 1974).
Major assumptions of the
model:
All the family systems will want homeostasis which is a
sense of balance and stability
Each family has a subsystem, that is which holds onto the
different levels of power within the family
Enmeshed or rigid boundaries can prevent growth and
closeness
Families to be known that they are competent and capable
in solving their issues
The individual systems often may be a result within the
entire family
Looking at the assumptions you
listed above; reflect on each
assumption and how you feel it
fits/does not fit with a cultural
humility lens:
Within the cultural humility there are key components such
as openness, being “other-oriented” awareness, and being
acknowledged through the power imbalances. These
concepts have led to the families’ ideas to being more
capable and competent within solving their own problems.
Enmeshed and rigid boundaries could find to be difficult as
operating through h cultural humility is present through
boundaries which are within families varying from cultural
to cultural where differences are present in terms of what
the actual cultural norm is within the cultural boundaries.
Homeostasis is a desire that all families want, but within
cultural speaking terms it may look different of which is
expected through the SFT model.
Cultural humility could fit within looking into the whole
system as many cultures will encompass multigenerational
living, and the individuals as presented as part of the whole
unit either with extended family or with immediate family
members.
The sub-systems would support the view from the lens of
cultural humility. The distinction between the
martial/couple subsystem and effective within the parental
hierarchy are viewed through the nuclear family lens as well
as coalitions severed “Within the traditional extended
Mexican American family. Within the Mexican cultural they
tend to be more child focused as the parent-child subsystem
is greatly emphasized, which then surpasses within the
importance of the spousal subsystem. As the parents will
expect children to obey without the questioning of any
directive given.

Native American Families
As clinicians will need to be mindful of their feelings which
has been carried out by the Native Americans towards
additional cultures which has a strong focus on the white
culture. Within conducted research it shows that by the
practitioner recognizing as well as being empathetic
towards whether the family’s cultural has been considered
as contextual within the family subsystems and asked if
acculturation is presented as an issue or if there is
disengagement within the subsystem or if enmeshment has
been presented (Minuchin, 1974). If this has been presented,
then how are the interactions and communication being
affected? What are the changes that enhance relationships of
the family subsystems? Understandings of the family
subsystems which are within the family the influences that
culture presents on the systems which is essential in the
focus of effective therapy.
African American Families
African American mothers within the United States have
been negatively impacted by the macro- and the
microsystemic variables (Dickerson, 1995). “Minuchin’s
Structural Family Therapy (SFT) serves to restructure the
boundaries and the hierarchy for the woman and their
children (Minuchin, 1974).” The SFT supports empowering
single mothers to be within the top levels of the hierarchy
and have presented to open a different approach within the
work with ethnic minority woman.
