Module 2 Milestone
For this milestone I will be interviewing associated parties that will be the target audience
of the application that is currently being developed. The application will help people monitor loved ones or colleagues that may have a mental disability such as dementia or just require monitoring due to being young or even high-risk workplaces. Some topics might include how they would use an application like this, what are some key functions would be required for the application to apply to their situation, to what extent of monitoring would be required? – Camera
View/Boundaries/Motion Detection etc, what age group would you be using this application on? Is the need for this application for medical, personal, or professional use. I will be interviewing three sample audience users and giving them the opportunity to address their wants and needs for
this application. Interview One, I completed this interview verbally with a customer from one of my existing businesses. She is a mother of three, and her spouse does traveling work for construction. She is interested in the application for monitoring the children when she is busy or not available. Key features she listed as a necessity were camera integration for front and back yards, motion detection for the pool, and appliance sensors for the oven. Her main concerns were
the children cooking and starting a fire, and the pool motion detection. She included camera integration as more of a strange person alert than her children leaving the yards. She also expressed concern for cost as she’s priced pool motion detection in the past and most are a subscription model and are very costly.
Interview Two, I completed this interview verbally with my mother on the topic of elder-
care. My mother looks after my grandmother who lives in her own apartment near-by. With her increasing age, my grandmother has trouble remembering when she has started things like the oven or bathtub. She also is beginning to lack certain cognitive functions such as what to do if the house gets cold. My mother noticing these changes over the last few months has began searching for options on how to provide care, when I spoke about this topic she agreed there is a need for an application such as this. Some key features she gave were appliance detection such as the oven, iron, and bathtub. She wasn’t as worried about boundaries as my grandmother hasn’t
ever left the apartment and become lost but did express how that feature could be very useful if the situation called for it. During this interview we had an interesting debate about the ethics of an application like this, and while some make good points on the invasion of privacy with camera or motion detection; the application is not meant or developed for the purpose of spying. This is one of those issues that comes along with any product brought to market as an unintended
use. So, while I am not exactly sure on how to prevent misuse in this application I stand firm in my belief that an application such as this could greatly help certain parties. Interview Three, I decided to cover one more group that may be able to use the application. This would be a professional application, in an assisted living facility. These facilities are unlike nursing homes in the notion that residents usually reside in their own apartments and are visited by helpers throughout the day/week. This application would apply to this type of lifestyle in forms of monitoring for emergencies. The application could read sensors such as the oven, faucets, and even the fall sensor. Since most of these facilities are gated and enclosed, the threat of wandering isn’t at the top of the list. Utilizing this application with these

Case Study – The New Engineer
Jeff was just hired by GSI, Inc. to be their Environmental and Safety Coordinator. This is Jeff's first position after completing his engineering degree. He had taken a course in safety engineering as part of his studies and felt confident that he could handle the job.
Management at GSI, Inc. has assured him that they are committed to maintaining a safe workplace. They have never had an individual dedicated to this task full-time. They will implement his recommendations if he can justify them.
As Jeff begins to get familiar with the operations, he spends considerable time on the production floor. He notices workers clean their tools before break with a liquid from an unmarked 55-gallon drum. They also use this liquid to clean residue from their skin. They use paper towels to dry their tools and hands, throw these towels in the trash, and head to the break room for a snack and/or smoke.
In talking with the workers, Jeff learns of some of…

Case Study: Paula’s Pain
Paula has worked for Brindle Corporation for 3 years. During this time, she has worked as a machine operator/cell leader in various work cells. Recently, the plant went to mandatory 12-hour shifts and plans to remain on this schedule for several months.
Paula’s present work cell is manufacturing 3-inch diameter exhaust tubes that are made from stainless steel. These tubes get a hole punched in them, a flange welded on, and burrs ground off. The pipe then gets placed into a gage to check that it was made correctly. (The tubes weigh about six pounds.)
Paula has been performing the welding operation. She leans into the machine and loads the part into a fixture then positions the flange. Both pieces are clamped (using hand clamps) into position and the machine is cycled by depressing two palm buttons.
The gaging operation requires placing the finished part into the gage and clamping it (using hand clamps) into place. A pin is depressed to verify the position…

You are employed as a mechanical engineer within an unnamed research center, specializing in the
development of innovative air conditioning systems. Your division is tasked with providing computer-based
modeling and design solutions using computational fluid dynamics through ANSYS software. Your primary
responsibilities involve the analysis of horizontal channel dynamics to meet specific criteria. Under the
guidance of your immediate supervisor, you have been assigned unique responsibilities within an ongoing
project. As a member of the research team, your role includes constructing an appropriate model and
executing a sequence of simulation iterations to explore and enhance channel performance. Figure 1
provides a visualization of the horizontal channel under consideration. Consider 2D, incompressible, steady
flow in a horizontal channel at a Reynolds number of 150. The schematic below illustrates the channel flow,

Question 2
You are a biomedical engineer working for a small orthopaedic firm that fabricates rectangular shaped fracture
fixation plates from titanium alloy (model = "Ti Fix-It") materials. A recent clinical report documents some problems with the plates
implanted into fractured limbs. Specifically, some plates have become permanently bent while patients are in rehab and doing partial
weight bearing activities.
Your boss asks you to review the technical report that was generated by the previous test engineer (whose job you now have!) and used to
verify the design. The brief report states the following... "Ti Fix-It plates were manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5) and machined into
solid 150 mm long beams with a 4 mm thick and 15 mm wide cross section. Each Ti Fix-It plate was loaded in equilibrium in a 4-point bending
test (set-up configuration is provided in drawing below), with an applied load of 1000N. The maximum stress in this set-up was less than the

Which one of the below statements is mostly NOT
correct about in creation of detailed design of
component?
The selection of material is based on what is
required to performance the function.
The tolerance is determined by the function, not
the preference of designer or manufacture.
In the selection of manufacturing processes, the
number of components to be manufactured
needs to be considered, as the capital
investment needs to be considered.
I do not need to show or prove the component is
working: such how much electricity is generated
in power panel, how much braking force is
generated in by the brake disc, or how much the
force the component in suspension is
subjected?

You are an engineer working on a project and your prototype has failed prematurely. You question whether or not a key component of the prototype was manufactured with the correct material. There are two way to check for the material properties. The first way is to have a material certification done to confirm the exact material composition. This will take some time. The second method to confirm the material properties is to make an ASTM test sample and test for the material properties. This tensile test was completed on a test sample with an initial diameter of .501” and an initial length of 2”. The Load-Deflection data for this tensile test is below. Use this data to answer the first set of questions on the Final Exam in eLearning. A. Determine the Ultimate Tensile Strength B. Determine the 0.2% Offset Yield Strength C. Determine the value of the Proportional Limit D. Determine the Modulus of Elasticity E. Determine the Strain at Yield F. Calculate %…
