Foundational Knowledge Worksheet 2 ABA 603 Introduction Foundational Knowledge refers to concepts (not skills, tactics, or tasks a practitioner implements or performs) that are related to the basic underpinnings of the science of ABA; knowledge upon which all behavior-analytic skills and practices are based upon or derived from. It is essential for scholars in Applied Behavior Analysis to demonstrate mastery of foundational knowledge content in order that behavior analytic skills and client-centered tasks are implemented effectively, efficiently, and ethically. In ABA 603: Research Methods in ABA, the student will be reading, writing and talking about behaviors, measurement, experimental design, and visual analysis. These components are included on the BACB Task List© and form the primary content introduced in this class. Each of these items is aligned with the scientific values and assumptions of the field of behavior analysis. In addition to hands on application of each of these items, the students will connect each to the values, assumptions, and principles – that is, the foundational knowledge – upon which it is aligned. The Foundational Knowledge Worksheets will be completed partially during two live class meetings across the semester. These exercises will require the student to make connections between foundational knowledge concepts, measurement, experimental design, and identification of the problem. Instructions In your assigned group review, discuss, and complete Part 1 and Part 2 of the worksheet. It is recommended that each group member complete Part 1 independently, first, and then compare answers with group members. Discrepancies should be discussed and researched using your primary textbooks, and corrected. Part 2 of the worksheet requires longer, more elaborative answers. Within the group, discuss each item in Part 2, with each group member adding to the discussion. Write notes. During or immediately following the discussion, or later at home, each student should formulate written answers to each item. Finally, each student will enter their own answers into the designated area on Canvas. Use your textbook and other sources. Focus on quality versus quantity, but know that each item in Part 2 will be graded based on the depth of responding. Please see your professor should you have any questions about this assignment. Foundational Knowledge Worksheet 2 ABA 603 Part 1 –10 points each Foundational Knowledge - Definitions Fill in the blanks with one of the following terms (not all terms will be used): determinism empiricism experimentation pragmatism effectiveness generality behavioral applied analytic prediction control contingencies radical contiguity discontinuous 1. Behavior analysts believe that functional relations occur in an orderly fashion between variables. To have this view, the behavior analyst must believe in the assumption of determinism. 2. Behavior and it’s controlling variable typically have contingencies in time and/or space. 3. Melissa wanted to run a 5k road race in August, so she put an intervention in place where she had to run increasing amounts of time across 3 days a week for 14 consecutive weeks, going by the recommendations on the Couch to 5k app. Melissa recorded data on how much weight she lost across the 14 weeks, however, “losing weight” does not qualify as a target behavior under the behavioral dimension of applied behavior analysis. Bonus (worth 5 points): Name the threat described ________________________ (hint: the answer is NOT in the word bank above). 4. This level of scientific understanding is found during experimental manipulation of variables: control__. 5. One of the advantages of using a multiple-baseline design is that it inherently, because of the way the design works, shows effectiveness in the intervention. 6. Henry wanted to show that an intervention he wrote for Professor Sally’s class would work in his setting. So, after gaining the proper consents, Henry implemented the intervention with a student in his classroom to determine its _ generality___. Part 2 (20 point each) 1. First, choose a behavior & intervention(s) that would be appropriate to evaluate within an alternating treatments design. Second, describe these variables and provide a rationale for why an alternating treatments design would be appropriate. Third, explain how you would determine a functional relationship between the variables (use specific terminology). Fourth, provide a statement Revised 1.20.21 2
