The medicinal plant I am studying is Matricaria chamomilla, or better known as Chamomile. Chamomile is native to both eastern and southern Europe, but can be found in regions of western Asia. It does not have a specific ecosystem it grows in, although it will not survive in arid climates. Due to it’s popularity, it can be found growing allthroughout Europe as well as turkey and a few middle eastern countries. (Brinckmann, Engels 2015). These chemicals include alpha-bisabolol, alpha-bisabolol oxides A and B, and matricin. These volatile oils are then converted to chamazulene and other flavonoids. Afer being extracted, these chemicals can be used in various ways, such as an anti-inflammatory, or to improve cardiovascular health.(Gupta et al. 2011) These chemicals have also been seen to aid people with the common cold or to calm a fever. The plant produces these chemicals to regulate cell growth and attract pollinators. It may also be used in protection against stresses on the plant but I could not find any research pertaining to this. Chamomile has traditionally been used as a calming herb, usually in teas. It was very popular in ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Contrary to many medicinal herbs, chamomile’s use has not changed much since then. Humans will regularly dry chamomile flowers and grind them up into various powders and teas for its beneficial effects.(Dai, Ling, Wing, et al. 2022). Chamomile is an incredibly valuable resource and should be utilized by all peoples for its anti-oxidant effects.
