When counseling clients with substance use disorders or addictions, they may also suffer
from medical or health issues. Clients with substance use disorders or addictions frequently
have one or more comorbid medical diseases, such as lung or heart disease, stroke, cancer,
or mental health disorders (NIDA, 2022). For example, clients with alcoholism might suffer
from liver damage, cocaine usage might lead to heart issues, and tobacco users might
develop respiratory problems. To go about helping these clients, I would consult medical
journals, medical professionals, and my supervisor to ensure that I create a quality treatment
plan.
As a counselor, it is essential to know that clients with substance use disorders or addictions
have a higher chance of contracting HIV/ AIDS due to risky sexual behaviors. Having several
sexual partners throughout a lifetime, using condoms inconsistently, or engaging in casual
sex are examples of risky sexual behaviors. Current research shows that unsafe sexual
behavior is frequently associated with drinking and using illegal drugs (Henry Kaiser
Foundation, N.d). To help promote their knowledge and skills of positive health and recovery,
I would recommend sexual health educational groups. These groups would be beneficial so
they can learn more skills, such as self-control and coping strategies. Often, they engage in
risky behaviors for drugs or to cope with life. I would encourage them to educate themselves
about the health consequences of a dangerous lifestyle through literature, groups, and other
materials.
