Report
Note Taking For Lectures and Reading Assignments Before the Semester 1. Review learning outcomes for each course and turn them into questions. 2. Review the Table of Contents of each textbook and turn chapter/section headings into questions. 3. Write down these guiding questions and use them to focus your note taking in lectures and readings. During the Semester 1. Take notes by doing a Capture of the following elements in the lecture or reading: Purposes/Questions the questions that are being answered in the lecture or reading (these are the reasons or purposes why you are listening to the lecture or doing the reading) Main Ideas/Answers the key terms and answers to the questions in the lecture or reading Details/Examples the details or examples that explain the main ideas more fully Values the personal importance of the reading or the lecture to the author/professor and why it is important to you 2. Take 15 minutes after class to Expand on the information in your Capture by adding more Purposes/Questions, Main Ideas/Answers, Details/Examples, Value statements. 3. Share what you have learned in your Capture and Expand with someone else and make sure they understand what you shared. 4. Go back and do steps 1-3 as needed until you can Teach the concepts in your Capture and Expand from your own memory. Creating a Reference Example Creating a reference example means taking a main ideas in a lecture or reading and attaching to it a purpose/question, main idea/answer, details/examples, and a value statement. The more personal and connected the reference example, the easier it will be to recall. Think of a reference example as what you will share when called to teach the related idea or concept. You need to be able to recall reference examples without any prior queuing. So, you will want to practice sharing what you Capture and Expand as reference examples to really solidify them for teaching and testing situations which are really the same thing. Example Concept Faith Purpose/Question: What is faith? Main Idea/Answer: Faith it the principle of action in all intelligent beings Details/Examples: I pray daily because I believe that Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers Values: Understanding how faith works helps me take action in my life that brings blessings and answers
