1.
Describe the Nickel Mines school incident and how the value of forgiveness
was demonstrated. Your answer should include who, what, where, and why
(i.e., what motivated the guilty party).
Who- Charles Roberts 1v was the shooter, and the victims were 10 girls
What- Five school girls were killed and five others were wounded
Where- In an Amish school near Nickel mines in Pennsylvania
Why- Charles Roberts was angry
2.
How does the Amish demonstrate forgiveness in Nickel Mines connected with
at least two of the following:
a.
Gelassenheit/yielded ness
-
Gelassenheit is full submission to God. It also is similar to
forgiveness in the sense you don't seek revenge
b.
Dirk Willems and the Martyrs' Mirror
-
He was an anabaptist who was imprisoned and escaped. During
his escape, he crossed a frozen lake and after getting by it,
someone who was chasing him fell through. Willems went back and
helped him out but when he was helping, he was recaptured and
killed.
c.
The Lord's Prayer
-
Very important prayer in Christianity. It means forgiveness because
in part of it, it talks about in Matthew that we must forgive others to
forgive us.
d.
Amish view evil within their church and outside of their church
-
They think evil comes from satan. Started when he got Eve to eat
the apple which then cursed Earth and now Earth is full of evil.
They know they sin, and they think that affects their community.
3.
How does the Amish forgiveness response compare to the likely response of
mainstream American society? Consider messages you may have had
around forgiveness in your schools, family and friends, and faith communities
as relevant.
What questions does this raise for you about the Amish? Give
some thoughts and observations from your own experiences of mainstream
culture. We will discuss these questions in class to help us expand on the
readings.
-
Just in terms of school shootings, the entire world holds children's lives
higher than any other. In a situation like Sandy Hook, the nation was
calling for the head of the shooter, whereas in the Amish example, those
chose rather to forgive him through the grace of god. It kinda makes me
wonder if the Amish truly forgive him, or are just doing it through their faith.
8. How did the Amish ethic of forgiveness compare with Elie Wiesel?
-
The Amish forgive everything, where as Elie Wiesel couldn't forgive.
5. Write the people in the group and their roles: you need a
Vocalizer and a Scribe #1
If more than two –you should have a facilitator and
Scribe #2, -The Vocalizer should
be someone whose
-
Tommy-Facilitator
-
Teddy-Scribe
-
Daniel Vocalizer
6. Discuss insights from your answers to the poll and the class aggregate answers.
Discuss one thing you discussed to help each of your questions 1 and 2 to improve your
before-class questions. Write a few notes on both
If someone did something to us we want to get back. As a group, we agreed that it's
hard to overcome taking someone we care about lives. The Amish have been taught to
forgive in their religion at a young age, and forgiveness gets them closer to god.
7. Pick one question that connection both Amish/non- Amish sentiments around
forgiveness and put that here
-
Do the non amish people see eye to eye when pertaining to forgiveness about
the amish school shooting? Does this cause controversy between the two?
