Describe the Case and the Context
84-year-old Kenny Strober has Parkinson's disease and has trouble seeing. He is an elderly
man who lives alone in a housing complex. He is a widow, and the only member of his family
with whom he maintains touch is his son, who pays his bills and visits him once a month even
though this is not considered to be a close relationship. Following his hip fracture, which he
sustained seven months ago after falling in his flat, Kenny has been sent to case management
services. He undergoes physical treatment while in the hospital. Although he now uses a cane
and is happy to be returning to his normal activities, he also has a walker that he utilizes when he
feels the need for it. He is now at home. The primary issues the case manager has discovered are
that Kenny has his shades drawn at home, which makes his flat extremely gloomy and may
worsen his already limited vision. While Kenny uses his cane outside of his house, he attempts to
independently move around within. He has one phone with a lengthy cord that extends around
his residence. Kenny and the case manager talked about these things, but he rejected her advice.
Since his injury, he has fallen once, but fortunately no significant injuries occurred. Kenny has
declined the case manager's request for authorization to speak with his kid about these issues.
2.
Define the Ethical Problem
In my opinion, the ethical dilemma in this scenario is the client’s self-determination interferes
with his physical safety. The social worker is torn between wanting to accept the client's
preferences and feeling that they have a moral duty to care for their client's safety and well-
being. In order to effectively assist the client, the social worker must resolve the competing
viewpoints.
3.
Gathering Information (who else can give you more information about this case?
Where else can you get information on this case?)
If I was to gather information I would meet with Kenny and talk to him about the reasons
why he disagrees with My recommendation for how to handle his problems. He may have
some ideas that would be more beneficial and interesting to test, so I may ask him. I may ask
Kenny why he doesn't want me to talk to his soon or if he has any other people, he will want
me to contact with on his behalf.
4.
Determine Applicable Ethical Theories and Principles (refer to Rothman textbook -
Chapter 2. Explain the ethical theories and principles as it relates to this case. How
does it relate to this case?)
From my understanding, an applicable ethical theory would be Dolgoff, Harrington, and
Loewenberg's ethical principles applies to this case due to the first principle that takes
priority over all other principles which is the protection of his life. I choose this principle
because ethical choices are made in the context of life, social workers must cherish life and
always put it above all other values. This also means that while using this approach, safety
must always come first in all circumstances. The client's safety must always come first for
the social worker while determining how to move forward.
5.
Determine Relevant Elements in the NASW Code of Ethics (Use at least 2 provisions
from the Code of Ethics and provide subsection (for example 1.07 Privacy and
Confidentiality). Describe it and explain how it relates to this case.)
The NASW code of ethics' dedication to clients (section1.01) and self-determination
(section1.02) are the two portions that are most pertinent in this situation. To defend the
client's well-being, the social worker must be dedicated to them. Self-determination refers to
the requirements that clients must meet to reach their objectives and exercise independent
decision-making.
6.
Define your Personal Values and Biases
I don’t have any biases but a value that I have it to always take care of your elders no
matter what. Which I think is verry important. If I was in Kenny’s situation, I would want
someone to take care of me when I get old. Making such a choice would probably be quite
difficult for me as well. Due to past experiences with my own family, I will find it extremely
challenging to work with older people and make judgments concerning their safety versus
autonomy. I would be conflicted and find it difficult to give the request precedence above
other things. I must, therefore, work with a customer and, without a doubt, get the opinion of
a different coworker or supervisor.
7.
Consider the Values of the System/Agency (consider the agency and/or system(s)
impacting this client and identify the values for both the agency and system at large)
I would have to consider the importance of the organization they are employed by in this
circumstance. Kenny's safety would need to be my first concern as I would be working for an
organization like adult protective services. But if I worked for a complex for older citizens, I
would probably concentrate on the complex's procedure for what to do in Kenny's circumstance.
