Values can be found in the individual, ethics in groups or organizations, and laws in larger societies. What differences are there between values, ethics, and laws? Why are there ethics for counselors? Depending on your program of study, which codes of ethics will you abide by and why?
Values encompass beliefs and attitudes that guide daily living, while ethics concern the beliefs regarding what constitutes right conduct. Ethics are the moral principles embraced by an individual or a group, establishing rules for correct behavior. They represent aspirational goals or the highest standards set by a
profession, and their enforcement is overseen by professional associations, national certification boards, and government regulatory boards overseeing professions. Ethics, therefore, serve as a framework for maintaining and upholding standards in professional conduct.
(Corey et. al, 2019) As a professional mental health counselor I will abide by the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. This is required to be a professional counselor and provides the guidelines I need to follow to be a successful and ethical counselor. References
