2.3 Power Saturday, February 6, 2021 18:52 Power %+ This 1s another term that has many meanings in language and one specific, well defined meaning in physics. ., 0.0 Power is the rate at which energy 1s consumed or produced (amount of energy per time) *, 0‘. Metric unit 1s watts (W) which 1s joules (J) per second (s) ., 0.0 This 1s analogous to $'hour. Power = Energy / Time Example 1 Appliances that heat up tend to be the highest power. A hairdryer 1s approximately 1500W. How much energy 1s used by hairdryer 1n 5 minutes? (1500 J/s) x (300 s) = 450,000 T=450kJ How does that compare to a TV? (TV 1s about 20W) (20J/s)x(300s)=6,000T=6kJ Example 2 Imagine a motorcycle accelerates from a stop signto a speed of 50 km/hr. There 1s power being produced and power being consumed. Explain in terms of energy increase and decrease. Produced: Decrease chemical energy (GAS) Consumed: Increase Kinetic Energy (Motorcycle and the Rider) Increase Thermal energy (motor heats up)
