Phys 211 IMPULSE & MOMENTUM Readings: OpenStax Ch 9 An object’s momentum ( 𝑝𝑝⃗ ) depends on its mass and velocity: 𝑝𝑝⃗ = 𝑚𝑚𝑣𝑣 An object’s momentum will not change unless a net force acts on the object. Whenever a force acts on an object over s ome me, the force imparts an impuls e ( 𝐽𝐽 ). The impulse imparted by a force 𝐹𝐹 which acts on an object from me 𝑡𝑡 𝑖𝑖 to 𝑡𝑡 𝑓𝑓 is: 𝐽𝐽 = 𝐹𝐹 d 𝑡𝑡 𝑡𝑡 𝑓𝑓 𝑡𝑡 𝑖𝑖 = 𝐹𝐹 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 Δ𝑡𝑡 The net impulse imparted by the net force acng on an object is the change of the object’s momentum: Δ𝑝𝑝⃗ = 𝐽𝐽 𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑡𝑡 Similarly, the momentum of a system will not change unless a net force acts on the system: this is the Conservaon of Momentu m and will hold for all isolated systems. The momentum of a system is the vector summaon of all of the momenta of the individual objects making up the system. Conservaon of Momentum can also be writen in terms of the net, external force acng on the system: 𝐹𝐹 𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑡𝑡 = d𝑝𝑝 𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 d𝑡𝑡 If there is not net force acng on the system, the derivave of the momentum with respect to me is zero: this means the momentum of the system is constant. PHYS 211 RECITATION 2 Problem 1 . A baseball bat hits a 149 g baseball. The velocity of the ball is shown below for before & after the bat-ball collision, which lasted 0.02 seconds. 1) What was the change in momentum of the ball? 2) What was the impulse on the ball? 3) What was the impulse on the bat? 4) What was the average force exerted on the ball? BEFORE 40 m / s AFTER 60 m/s
