Assertion Journal Entry #2 “Civil government, so far as it is instituted for the security of property, is in reality instituted for the defense of the rich against the poor, or of those who have some property against those who have none at all.” ― Adam Smith Adam Smith, a scottish philosopher during the Enlightenment and early Revolution time period, discussed the caste system regarding how the civil government distributes laws in order to protect the rich (property owners) in defense against the poor (peasants). In the first line Smith declares the repetition of the civil government line of reasoning about the security and protection of land, but the author claims it is more of a defense for the higher class since they own property. Except this goes further than the discussion of land, during this time period the upper class didn't have to contribute to taxes, in return the lower class (people who were not able to own land) were asked to pay an outrageous amount back to the government. In the second phrase the author uses anaphora to emphasize the deeper meaning behind: the rich and the poor, property owners and non- property owners. By expanding and empathizing how property owning goes hand and hand with economic status the others claims listed about becomes more clear to the audience. The authors claim is strong-willed and well examined making it an easy statement to follow, the treatment that went along with the three-estates (caste system economically) was unfair treatment and nowadays would be declared unconstitutional for the purposes of economic segregation. Moreover, the authors claim being the government supported one party over the other continued into later years, including: both World Wars, the civil rights movement, the womens right movement etc. The author mentions excellent points that can be compared to these separate events since the common denominator remains being the favor of one of apparent higher class favors more than of one being of apparent lower class.
