Bureaucracy Webquest Directions: There are three major divisions of the U.S. Federal Bureaucracy- the Executive Office of the President, the Executive Departments (Cabinet-Level), and Executive Agencies. Follow the links below to discover the purpose and role of each part of the federal bureaucracy. READ DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY. As you describe each one, provide SPECIFICS. For example, when researching the EPA, you should be listing more than, “they protect the environment.” What are the details? Part 1: Executive Office of the President Click on the following link: https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-trump-administration/ and scroll down to the section titled, “Executive Offices.” - Click on each of the following executive offices within the EOP and provide a basic description of each one’s role in the federal bureaucracy. o Office of Management and Budget (OMB): this oversees the president and the path, accomplishment of their main goals as president, and to fulfill their duties of the agency and president. o National Security Council (NSC): President’s main access point for overlooking national security and important international matters. The council under the president in this department is said to help and give assistance to the president and to control and maintain national security among different government agencies. o Council of Economic Advisers (CEA): This includes the executive office of the president, gives objective economic advice, ad control and regulates different foreign policies. Uses empirical evidence and statistical data to support the decisions of the president. Part 2: The 15 Executive Departments Click on the following link: https://www.whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/the-executive-branch/ and scroll down to the section titled, “The Cabinet.” - Find the following departments and provide a basic description of each one’s role in the federal government. o Defense: gives basic protection by providing a military force in case of war and the security of our country. There is many subcategories like the Navy, Army and Defense Intelligence Agency. o Education: helps to improve student learning, gives the goals and path for readiness for college and prepares students to be ready for jobs and a well-successful path, giving everybody equal access to knowledge and a successful future. o Homeland Security: keeps Americans safe from an potential dangers or threats, its goals are to prevent and stop any future terrorist attacks, keep safe civilian networks and communication, safety during natural disasters, border control and protection, and immigration control and checks. o State: helps develop the policies of the president, it helps represent our foreign appearance and diplomatic status. It helps assist and is responsible for military programs, foreign crime, and immigrant issues. o Transportation: helps to maintain a well needed transportation system with safety rules and easy affordable travel. This can help make our lives faster and better. This has many different employees and high running budget.
o Veterans Affairs: Helps support those who served in the war or in the military, or those who have been injured serving the military. This program benefits veterans and their families with programs to help them get back on their feet and support themselves. Part 3: Independent Executive Agencies There are three major types of executive agencies: Independent Executive Agencies, Regulatory Commissions, and Government Corporations. Follow the individual links for each one to discover their mission and role in the bureaucracy. - Independent Executive Agencies: created by Congress outside the departments for narrower purposes. o Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)- https://www.cia.gov/about-cia The CIA is known to the United State’s first line of defense and protection. It controls the power of information to keep our nation and citizens all safe. It is the first one up to defend our country from danger or harm, it is also a global intelligence connection. o Federal Election Commission (FEC)- https://www.fec.gov/about/mission-and-history/ helps control the finance law, and the financing for campaigns in the senate and different running campaigns throughout the white house. o Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)- https://www.epa.gov/aboutepa Is known to protect human health and also the environment, helps control the way we control our environment and helpful ways to keep everyone’s health safe. o Other examples include NASA, NLRB - Independent Regulatory Commissions: largely outside the reach of gov’t direction and control and are responsible for regulating the economy and large industries. o Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)- https://www.sec.gov/Article/whatwedo.html The SEC is known to help control out capital and how we spend or use it. Its helps to control the capital market and the money supply so that we avoid situations like the great depression. o Federal Reserve System- https://www.federalreserve.gov/aboutthefed/files/pf_1.pdf The federal reserve system control the central banking system of the US. It helps control the monetary system that avoid any money crisis in the future. o Federal Trade Commission (FTC)- https://www.ftc.gov/about-ftc/what-we-do This commission helps control consumer protection of goods and services, it helps promote the antitrust law and everyone must serve at least seven terms. - Government Corporations: set up by Congress to carry out certain business-like activities. The government owns the stock and charges for services. o Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)- https://www.fdic.gov/about/strategic/strategic/mission.html This is the corporation that helps provide deposit insurance for different companies and people. This includes the National Credit Union Admission which helps control credit unions across the country. o AmTrak- https://history.amtrak.com/amtraks-history/amtrak-today AmTrak is a national railroad company that has many different railroad services that has both long-distance and short-distance rides and transportation services including the US and cities in Canada.
