For this week’s discussion, you will be examining interest groups. First, select an interest group of your choice. Using the internet, you will then search for more information on your selected interest group, and answer the following questions: 1. What is the name of the interest group you selected? 2. Your course text identifies “five flavors” that interest groups typically come in (membership, trade association, individual institution, government lobbyists, and private individuals). Identify which of these best describes your interest group and why. 3. What does the interest group advocate for? What are its goals? 4. What is the group’s history and how old is the group? 5. In general, what are strategies used by interest groups to accomplish their goals? 6. What are the main ways your chosen interest group specifically promotes their agenda? What are their lobbying efforts at the state and local levels? Cite all sources using MLA format. 1. The interest group I choose would be the Human Rights Campaign. 2. The Human Rights Campaign would fall into the membership flavor. The reason why is it would have all its members have a common interest which would be LGBTQ Rights. 3. The Human Rights Campaign advocates for all people that are part of the LGBTQ. The group fights for equality for all. They would like the same freedoms and rights as people that are not part of the LGBTQ. 4. The Human Rights Campaign was established in 1980 by Steve Endean. When it was first created it was called the Human Rights Campaign Fund and was used to back pro-fairness congressional candidates. In the 80's they had very few openly LGBTQ officials in office (HRC Foundation).
5. The Human Rights Campaign, focuses on campaigning to the American people trying to get equality for all. One main way is getting LGBTQ people to vote in the elections to get more lgbtq friendly people into office. 6. They work with different organization and allied groups, to help do research and to do digital campaigns to help the public understanding of the LGBTQ people. The Human Rights Campaign does not only work with every branch of the federal government, they also work closely with each state to ensure that all LBGTQ issues receive the attention it deserves. They lobby for pro-equality legislation, and they help monitor the records of judicial nominees on LGBTQ Equality (HRC Foundation). The lobbying efforts would be a type of grassroots lobbying type where they have people of each state reach out to their local and state politicians to help get equality for all people.
