Elizabeth Teasley POLS 6060: Public Admin HR Management Dr. Christie Burton February 19, 2023
What I learned from the assessment I avoid conflict because of the lack of caring and trust, especially when there is a lack of respect for one another, my thought process to be willing to compromise is nonexisting. I’ve also learned Conflict management is an important part of any relationship, any group, or any organization. You may experience conflict with a friend, a classmate, a coworker, a supervisor, or a subordinate. Conflict may be about personal preferences, political differences, or organizational policies and procedures. Conflict may reside largely below the surface, but it also may break into the open—sometimes at the oddest times—and, on occasion, latent conflict may explode into sheer nastiness. In interpersonal conflict (the type that we are primarily concerned with), Roxane Lulofs and Dudley Cahn (2000). So, when it comes to the case study and what I learned about myself in the assessment, and how it would impact my recommendation in the case study. When it comes to identifying the source of the problem, I have to be willing to take responsibility for my role and what I am supposed to be bringing to the situation, in the case study being the director of Public Health Preparedness in Puerto Rico. First, I would understand what the conflict is and then face the conflict with Mr. Gonzales, by establishing a clear understanding of the issue at hand and have both of us communicate and come up with a plan for a solution. Making sure Mr. Gonzales understands each position and provides facets that would be helpful to make sure his health needs are met and trusting the plan. So even though my assessment states a lack of trust and wanting to avoid conflict, I have to be able to make decisions and compromise to be able to make sure the needs of Mr. Gonzales are met. When facing a conflicting situation, you have to be able to have an open mind and listen to the other person that is
voicing their concerns. To be able to come up with a plan that can be helpful to all parties. As the director of Public Health, you should never allow a lack of awareness the behavior that the ambulance service staff showed was behavior that should not be shown amongst other people. The recommendation for the care of Mr. Gonzales is to address different various strategies and as the director of Public Health speak with the family and get them to understand the importance of seeking care for better health. There just has to be a mutual level of respect and trust and the ability to understand and compromise. Something I lack and a lot of people lack especially when you already are under a lot of stress and just want results but don’t want to put in the work to get the results done as an organization correctly and effectively. This is what a lot of organizations lack, and so do I but I also feel the relationship between the people plays a part because I can be uninterested when it comes to resolving conflict with a coworker but someone on the outside of my organization, I can show a level of care and be able to compromise to get the best ending results.
