Report
September 24, 2022 Dear Kevin Brady, On the 6th of January 2021, the center of our democracy fell under attack. The bill proposed to prevent and predict an uproar like this again is the “National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act”, or in short, H.R.3233 (Library of Congress). This proposal would create a commission to investigate the January 6 United States Capitol Attack. This committee would be required to conduct an investigation of the relevant facts and circumstances of the attack on the Capitol, identify, review, and evaluate the causes of and the lessons learned from this attack, and submit specified reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations to improve detection of another attack. On Jan. 06, 2021, as Congress met to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election, a mob of rioters arrived in response to Trump's request, carrying with them intentions of violence against members of Congress and staff (“The January 6 Attack on The US Capitol”). Although Capitol Police outnumbered rioters, the phalanx was no match for the participants in unabashed violence; windows and offices were smashed, and insurrectionists viciously attacked. Rioters began soon-to-be-tragic confrontations with Capitol Police, and most of the mob members were armed and violent. The number of deaths quickly jumped to 5 people, which includes one police officer who was beaten to death H.R. 3233 would create an organized and thoughtful way of investigating the January 6th attack on The Capitol almost identically similar to the group established for the September 11, 2001 attacks (“Support H.R. 3233, a bill to create a commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.”). We must have a commission that is properly funded and resourced to evaluate the safety needs of our country. H.R. 3233 would give the commission adequate authority on a bipartisan basis, allow research in any direction investigation takes, and give subpoena powers (Bassin). This is guaranteed to be a bipartisan commission, and subpoenas may only be issued when an agreement between the Chair and the Vice Chair is made. All issues must have the majority vote of the commission panel. This will be carried out through a panel of 10 members, and each half will be represented by a party. The passing of
this commission will also require that investigation be done promptly due to final reports being due at the end of the year. This bill proposes many benefits to American safety, and I urge you to reject the misconceptions some of the opponents may have raised. Critics argue that the investigation of the January 6th attack by the House committee is illegitimate and will amount to political inequality by democrats and Republicans who don’t support Donald Trump, rather than an unbiased quest to prevent disorder (Jacobson). It is also argued that since the procedure of filling the commission's seats is partisan, the eventual composition of the committee will be flawed. Another concern is that this will interfere with the efforts of the congressional committees that have been investigating the attack. Kevin Brady, I urge you to support H.R.3233 as it has previously had notable bipartisan support, and deserves the same from the House of Representatives. In the past, you have proposed bills promoting the well-being of the public, like protecting medicare, so I assume this bill would also be important to you. By this Commission being enacted, congress can ensure that events and the happenings leading up to those events are thoroughly investigated apart from the constrained and partisan nature of congress itself. The people in the district who will benefit from this are lawmakers, government officials, staffers, state capitol workers, government building workers, and anyone who frequents the U.S. Capitol Complex/lives in the area and could potentially be affected by domestic terrorism. People in the district and state who will lose from this recommendation are domestic terrorists, insurrectionists, rioters, protesters, and people who participated specifically in the January 6th attack. The investigation of the facts and circumstances this commission calls for will make domestic riots/attacks at the Capitol Complex and government buildings more difficult to undergo, easier to predict, and easier to respond to (Library of Congress). Sincerely, A worker in Congress
