The Liberal Party:
Question One: Who is the leader and their biography?
●
Justin Trudeau is the leader of this party. Yuck I Know
●
Trudeau was born on December 25, 1971
●
Trudeau has three children, and is married to Sophie Trudeau
●
Trudeau has been the prime minister
since 2015 and the leader of his party since 2013
Question Two: What is the Party’s Platform Regarding these Topics?
a)
Economic Standpoint: This party has been trying to recover the economy due to COVID 19. They
have made over 1 million jobs available to recover from the pandemic. They have recovered over
90% of the jobs
lost from the pandemic. A plan they have is to establish a wage for workers that they
can live on. This party will give $10/day for childcare and are planning on improving the EI system,
gig workers, self-employed people and give workers better
financial safety
. They are also planning on
increasing Canadian
innovations and researching by investing more money. By creating more
environmentally friendly jobs across Canada they are slowly shifting to a greener economy. b)
Environmental Standpoint:
The goal for this party is to reduce their carbon emissions by 36% by
2030. They have implemented more greener jobs such as, using new and more energy efficient
materials and methods when doing construction. Another goal they have is to have a net-zero
emissions by 2050. The party will implement carbon
pricing where the buyer who purchases a
product that is not environmentally friendly will be taxed for every tonne of emissions burned. The
liberal party has priced carbon at $40/tone and are planning on increasing the price to $50 in 2020
and $170 by 2030. They also will eliminate subsidies
to the fossil fuel industry by 2023.
c)
COVID-19 Standpoint: The liberal government will have mandatory COVID-19 vaccines for all
employees working in federal public service. They are also planning on making vaccines mandatory
for people traveling on federal operated travel vessels such as plans, trains and cruise ships. They
also plan to invest $100 million to study the long-term effects of COVID-19, invest $6 billion in new
funding to healthcare, $400 million to virtual care and $3.2 billion to hire new doctors and nurses. d)
Gun Control Standpoint:
The liberal government has introduced the buyback program for firearms
which bans the use of guns and increases punishments for smuggling and trafficking guns, the
buyback program will help citizens sell their guns privately. This is the same party that introduced
the C-71 Bill banning all guns.
e)
Immigration Standpoint:
As we see the liberal government leans towards more immigration some
examples are the Afghanistan incident where the government has promised to let more than
20,000
refugees
from Afghanistan into Canada. The liberals are also promising to make housing more
affordable to foreigners coming to Canada. They also stated that they will be modernizing the
immigration process. f)
Pipeline Standpoint:
As we know this party has canceled the Keystone
pipeline project as they
support healing the environment. This party is also planning on ending all oil and gas subsidies
meaning that building the pipelines are no longer in the question
.
The Conservative Party:
2
Question One: Who is the leader and their biography?
●
Erin O’Toole is the leader of this party
●
O’Toole was born on January 22, 1975
●
O’ Toole has two children, and is married to Rebecca O’Toole
●
He studied at law at Dalhousie University and the Royal Military College of Canada
●
He has been the member of the Canadian House of Commons since 2012 Question Two: What is the Party’s Platform Regarding these Topics?
g)
Economic Standpoint: This party prefers less taxes and less government control. Instead, they have
more power towards the province’s government. The Conservative party would also like to invest
about $5 billion to the Canadian Advanced research Agency. Doing this would increase the GDP to
around 0.6% to 1.6% in the next 1-5 years
.
h)
Environmental Standpoint:
One of the Conservatives goals is to meet the Paris
Climate Goal which
wants to reduce emissions by 30% before 2030. Doing this will lead to a carbon tax within two years.
In case their climate plan fails, they would like to set the prices of $170/tonne by 2030. Another goal
they are trying to implement is a personal low carbon savings account. This is an account that gives
money back from the government through rebates
. With this, anytime someone purchases
hydrocarbon-based fuel this party would pay back, this way the money can be used for other green
products. Yes, the conservative party does still believe in our oil and gas industry, and they would
like to invest in green technologies. An example of this would be a Direct Air Capture and what this
device does is sucks carbon out of our atmosphere. i)
COVID-19 Standpoint: The conservatives have a very strong standpoint when it comes to the
Corona Virus firstly, they would like to prioritize the covid booster shots, have testing kits at
Canadian borders, and make rapid COVID tests more accessible and widely available to use and for
schools. Another plan they have is that they want to investigate the origins of COVID 19 and drive-up
Canadian research and the production of
the vaccines. The conservative party would also implement
a clear strategy for re-opening the borders, and quickly close the borders to travellers from where
there is a covid hotspot.
j)
Gun Control Standpoint:
Bill-C71 is a law in Canada that restricts the use of firearms. The
Conservatives disagree with this law as they think that Canadians have the responsibility
and can
manage using firearms safely.
k)
Immigration Standpoint:
The conservative party would like for foreign family and family members
to live in Canada for more than
5 years without a PR card. Canada currently uses a lottery system for
immigration and the conservatives would like to remove that for grandparents and parents and
replace this system with a first come first serve
type thing. Interactions between offices and
applicants would be recorded, and applications would have to pay a fee if they want to speed up the
process
. The
money would go towards the immigrants
' process
for many things such as hiring new
workers. l)
Pipeline Standpoint:
The party is favouring putting Canadians jobs back as well as building the
pipeline to help bring Canada's
economy back. They are planning on re-establishing the oil and gas
industry and strengthening it
.
