Dasia Torbert PSYC3100 Reaction to Growing Up Trans Documentary Some of the issues mentioned in the lecture notes on trans development are expanded upon in the documentary "Growing Up Trans," which has illuminating experiences of transgender children and teenagers. The film's portrayal of Ariel's perspective highlighted the differences between GNC and transgender identities. When discussing the psychological turmoil and discomfort that some people may feel when their gender identity does not align with society's expectations, Ariel compared living as GNC to living a double life. This differentiation is in line with what was discussed in the lecture about the many ways people arrive at their current gender identities as adults, which reiterated that not all GNC people identify as transgender. The necessity of allowing children to express and explore their gender identification before puberty is one component of trans development pointed out in the lecture. The experiences of the transgender children represented in the video articulately emphasize this point. The importance of social transition, coming out about one's gender identity, and having the support of one's family and medical professionals was shown across all families in different ways. The documentary also showed these young people's universal desire to live their lives free of the label of being transgender. They want nothing more than to be accepted for who they are and never have to explain or defend their gender identity again. This is consistent with the lecture's emphasis on the importance of providing transgender people with gender-affirming care and support so that they can live freely and securely in the gender they identify with. The discussion of medical transitioning, particularly hormone therapy, is a noticeable contrast between the documentary and the course notes. While the lecture notes advised the timing of hormone therapy for transgender people, the documentary revealed that some of the adolescents in the video began hormone therapy at younger ages than the recommended average. This distinction creates a difficult ethical and medical question: when should hormone therapy for transgender kids begin? Because of worries about emotional well-being and the irreversibility of some pubertal changes, some parents and healthcare practitioners may choose earlier commencement, according to the documentary. This distinction from the lecture notes highlights the ongoing discussion and unique nature of medical transitioning for transgender youth. Overall, the key finding that influenced my viewpoint was that the young children represented in the video appeared to have a clear and full understanding of the transitioning process. They articulate themselves with surprising clarity while addressing their gender identity and experiences. This discovery is consistent with the lecture notes and the focus on the basic characteristics of transgender identity and the persistence of gender dysphoria in some children, as seen by their aggressive affirmations of their actual gender. The documentary's unique stories, identities, and situations provide a diverse range of viewpoints on the transgender population. These customized stories help viewers understand the unique difficulties and triumphs of each child and family.
