PSY 211 Project One Template Use this template to complete your case study analysis. Answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 1. Describe the ways in which Piaget’s research applies to Jamie’s development. “Piaget’s position, called constructivism, was that children actively construct their own understandings of the world based on their interactions with it.” (Sigelman & Rider, 2017). Basically, he believed our development is influenced by observing our surroundings. Jamie’s mother raised her in a toxic environment due to her alcoholism and mental illness. Jamie watched and observed the way that her mother lived. This has caused Jamie to begin having problems in her own life. Like Piaget’s research, Jamie’s development is being affected due to her observing her surroundings. Judi observed her parents and ended up following in their footsteps, and Jamie then observed her mother acting in a similar manner. 2. Describe the ways in which Vygotsky’s research applies to Jamie’s development. “According to Lev Vygotsky’s theory, cognitive development is shaped by the culture in which children live and the kinds of problem-solving strategies that adults and other knowledgeable guides pass on to them.” (Sigelman & Rider, 2017). Jamie watched her mom from the time she was born. Her mother had mental illnesses and alcoholism. This greatly affected the way that Jamie’s cognition developed. For example, her mother isolated herself from the world and Jamie learned that behavior. 3. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s physical well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. One major factor that could have influenced Jamie’s physical well-being during the prenatal and birth stages was her mother’s mental illness and her abusing drugs and alcohol. It was not specified whether she was using during her pregnancy but if she did, this could directly impact the way Jamie’s body developed before she was even born. It could also impact her health once she is born. For example, if she was born addicted to drugs or if she suffered from a form of fetal alcohol syndrome. One factor that could have influenced Jamie’s physical well-being during the early childhood stage was her mother’s mental health. She was depressed and unable to properly care for Jamie. She was self-medicating with drugs and alcohol, and she was experiencing hallucinations. She was isolated in her house instead of taking her daughter on a walk or to the park. Kids need exercise and fresh air, and Judi was unable to provide that for Jamie. 4. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. One factor that could have influenced Jamie’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal and birth stages is her mother’s continuous abuse of drugs and alcohol. Using drugs and alcohol during pregnancy can result in numerous complications, both physical and mental. It can cause behavioral and cognitive developmental problems. One factor that could have influenced Jamie’s cognitive well-being during the early childhood stage is her mother’s inability to nurture and care for her as a mother should. Her mother was barely capable of taking care of herself because of her mental illness. She was unable to show her how to behave properly, which is likely why Jamie has anger outbursts. 1
5. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s psychosocial well-being during the early and middle childhood stages of development. A factor that could have influenced Jamie’s psychosocial well-being during the early and middle childhood stages is being in an environment where her mother is unable to regulate her emotions. Jamie’s home life has caused her to have problems with attention deficit, anxiety, and outbursts. She is unable to regulate her emotions, and often time has outbursts at school or in public. In turn, this causes her to feel shame and embarrassment which influences her psychosocial well-being. 6. Evaluate the sociocultural factors that could contribute to Jamie’s maladaptive behavior. Jamie’s maladaptive behavior likely stems from the lack of education she received from her mother on self-expression. Judi did not have friends and was often under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Because of this, she couldn’t teach Jamie how to make friends and how to behave in public. This is probably the reason she has issues with maintaining friendships with her peers. 7. Explain why it is important to consider the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors in combination (versus separately) throughout the life span when evaluating an individual’s well- being. It is important to consider the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors in combination throughout the life span because we learn, grow, and adapt starting from the day we are born. If we look at them separately, we might not be able to get an appropriate idea of one’s total well- being. Each of these factors plays a role in human development. They also play a role in the people we are and whom we become. 8. Describe the research or theory that best explains Jamie’s behavior. Explain your response. Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development is the theory I believe best explains Jamie’s behavior. “Erikson believed that humans everywhere experience eight major psychosocial stages, or conflicts, during their lives.” (Sigelman & Rider, 2017). During those eight psychosocial stages, Judi and Jamie had a rough mother-daughter relationship. Judi was unable to support, encourage, or discipline Jamie. She lacked the ability to care for and nurture Jamie. In turn, Jamie has trust issues, low self-esteem, and is unable to control her emotions. These are all affecting her development, psychically, cognitively, and psychosocially. 2
